Highland Takes on Coffeyville In a KJCCC Series

Highland baseball team squared off with Coffeyville in a KJCCC series and while competing against the Red Ravens were unable to pick up a win in the series.

Scotties suffered 3-0 and 5-1 losses on the road at Coffeyville, while falling 17-3 in six innings and 6-1 at home to wrap up the four-game set with the Red Ravens. Highland with the losses fall to 2-30 on the season and are still in search of their first KJCCC win of the season.

Game 1 at Coffeyville
The first game of the series saw a strong pitching out for both teams as the Scotties had Justin Rieschick on the mound and he held Coffeyville to just three runs on seven hits, but the Scotties were unable to get their offense going mustering only five hits. Scotties ultimately suffered the 3-0 loss in the first game of the series.

Highland spread their five hits out as Jackson Rehkow, Jordan McClellan, Conner Fiend, Nick Schifftner and Alejandro Pina each had a hit and the Scotties drew six walks but were unable to tally any runs. Rieschick in the loss tossed a strong six innings of work giving up three runs on eight hits and two hit batters, while striking out five.

Game 2 at Coffeyville
Game two at Coffeyville was much of the same for Highland on the offensive end as the Scotties scored a run in the contest but only managed one on six hits, while Coffeyville plated five on 13 hits. Coffeyville struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second but the Scotties responded with a run on a RBI single by Alejandro Pina in the top of the third. Coffeyville added to runs in the bottom of the third and then tacked on another in the fifth, while Highland had a few scoring opportunities but fell short in their attempt to plate more runs falling 5-1.

Both Pina and Nick Schifftner each had a pair of hits in the contest and an RBI as Schifftner had his second double of the day's action. On the hill Jake Schrock took the loss tossing four innings giving up five runs on 12 hits, while the bullpen tossed four scoreless innings giving up just one hit and five walks, while striking out seven between Austin Gottula, Dylan Arnette and Drake Seetin.

Game 1 vs Coffyeville (at Highland)
The series moved to Highland but it was the same struggles for the Scotties as Highland could not get the bats rolling consistently in the contests against Coffeyville. In the first game on Saturday the Scotties saw Coffeyville plate a run in the top of the first inning to take the early lead but Highland responded in the in the bottom of the first by loading the bases and then tying the contest on a RBI sac-fly by Nick Schifftner and then Brendon Bond reached on an error and another run scored giving Highland a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless second inning Coffeyville regained the lead by scoring a pair in the third but Highland responded again as the Scotties got an RBI single by Schifftner to score Dalton Burt tying the game at 3-3 after three innings. Coffeyville would control the rest of the game as they plated three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and then busted things open with a nine run sixth inning to ultimately game the gam 17-3 in six innings.

Scotties had just four hits as Schifftner, Conner Fiene, Jordan McClellan and Burt each had a hit, while Schifftner notching two RBI's. On the mound Noah McClanahan tossed 4.2 innings as the starter giving up eight runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out three.

Game 2 vs Coffeyville (at Highland)
Game two started off slow offensively for both teams as it was scoreless through the first two innings but Coffeyville plated a run in the third and fourth innings to lead 2-0 before the Scotties got on the board in the bottom of the fourth behind a RBI single by Nash Nickle to score Alejandro Pina. Red Ravens answered with a three run top of the fifth and scored another in the eighth inning, while the Scotties had limited opportunities in the contest and left four runners on in scoring position in the game falling 6-1 in the series finale.

At the plate the Scotties managed just five hits as Nickle paced the team with a 2-3 showing with an RBI and a double, while Pina was 1-3 with a run scored and was hit by a pitch. Jackson Rehkow and Nick Schifftner each had a hit also. On the mound in the loss Max Milligan tossed the most innings in a single appearance for himself this season going 7.1 innings giving up six runs on 11 hits, two walks and a hit batter, while striking out four.

Highland now turns their attention to a week full of non-conference action as the Scotties will travel to Trenton, Missouri on Tuesday, April 9th to play North Central Missouri College for one game at 2:00pm. Then the Scotties will have a four-game series with Baker University JV playing in Baldwin City, KS on Thursday, April 11th and then at home against Baker on Saturday, April 13th in doubleheaders each day.
