Lady Blue Devils Hammer Highland, 89-60

The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team (18-8, 6-3) took down the Highland Community College Scotties (15-11, 3-6), 89-60 Feb. 13 at MCC-Penn Valley.

Jada Johnson was the top performer for the Lady Blue Devils, leading all scorers with 20 points. She displayed efficiency from the field, shooting 5-9, including 2-4 from beyond the arc. Johnson showed some great defensive hustle while grabbing seven rebounds and three steals. Bennett Peck shot 5 of 8 from behind the arc and tallied 16 points. Both three pointers made and points for the game were career-highs. Victoria Jones played a pivotal role for her team, spending 39 minutes on the court. She contributed 13 points on 3-6 shooting and showcased her versatility by leading her team with five assists. Jones was also active on the boards, grabbing six rebounds and tallied a steal. Kaylyn Rogers had a solid all-around performance, scoring 14 points on an efficient 5-8 shooting. She was effective from the free-throw line, making 4 of her 6 attempts. Rogers also made significant contributions on the boards, grabbing six rebounds while tallying four assists. Symiah Bradley provided valuable scoring, contributing nine points on 3-4 shooting. She was effective from the free-throw line, making 3 of her 4 attempts. Jailynn Schmaltz provided a solid 23 minutes and went 4 of 5 from the field, finishing with 11 points and six rebounds.

Makayla Lemelle led the Scotties with 15 points, four rebounds and three steals. Sha'Coria Hill went 4 of 11 from the field and finished the day with 11 points, two assists and one rebound. Cameron McNamara went 3 of 4 from the field with nine points. She led the team with six rebounds. Lucy Hardy came off the bench and provided seven points and one steal. The loss stopped the Scotties' two-game winning streak, defeating Johnson County, 66-63 and Labette, 64-47, in consecutive games.

For the game, the Lady Blue Devils shot 58.7 percent from the field (27-46), 47.6 percent from three-point range (10-21) and 62.5 percent from the free-throw line (25-40). The Scotties shot 41.5 percent from the field (22-53), 8.3 percent from three-point range (1-12) and 62.5 percent from the free-throw line (15-24). There were three ties and four lead changes. The largest lead for the Blue Devils was 29, while the Scotties largest was by only three points.

The next game for the Lady Blue Devils is against the Allen County Community College Red Devils at 2 p.m. Feb. 17 in Iola, Kan.
