Blue Devils Dealt First Loss of Season by Iowa Western, 53-49

The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team (1-1) lost for the first time this season to the Iowa Western Reivers (1-0), 53-49 Nov. 7 at Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley.

The Blue Devil offense put up 17 points and shot only 25 percent from the free throw line in the first half, leading to a half-time score of 22-17 in favor of the Reivers. While KCKCC's shooting improved in the second half, it was not enough to overcome Iowa Western. Victoria Jones led the way for the Blue Devils with 17 points, four assists and seven steals, a new career high. Jada Johnson also tallied 15 points, averaging 23 points in the Blue Devils' first two games.

Iowa Western turned the ball over 28 times compared to 18 for KCKCC, but converted 13-20 from the free throw line. Both teams shot under 41 percent from the field and had 16 total team fouls.

Jailynn Schmaltz came off the bench and played 32 minutes while shooting 2-7 from the field and came away with five points.

The Blue Devils (1-1) are scheduled to face the North Platte Knights (3-1) at 6 p.m. Nov. 10 at Hy-Vee Arena for KCKCC's annual Hall of Fame Classic.
