Highland Baseball Picks Up First Win In Doubleheader Split With Oklahoma Wesleyan JV

After a pair of games in Great Bend, Kansas the Highland baseball team headed further south into Oklahoma and squared of with Oklahoma Wesleyan JV in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and the Scotties picked up their first win of the season with a split of the doubleheader. 

Scotties suffered a 11-1 loss in game one of the doubleheader but bounced back from that loss by earning their first win of the season by claiming a 7-6 win in game two of the doubleheader. The split of the doubleheader moved the Scotties to 1-7 on the season. 

Oklahoma Wesleyan JV took the early lead against the Scotties in game one plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and then Highland saw OKWU JV burst out for seven more runs in the bottom of the second inning the Scotties were unable to comeback in the contest with the matchup ending in five innings. Scotties lone run of the game came in the fourth inning as Victor Sanchez pushed a single into left field to bring in Brendon Bond (Timmons). Sanchez led the Scotties offensively going 2-2 at the plate with an RBI as the Scotties only have five hits in the contest. On the mound Drake Seetin took the loss tossing one inning as the starter. 

Game two Highland established the early lead and held on to it for the 7-6 win, holding on for the win despite a late comeback by OKWU JV late in the game. Scotties got on the board in the Top of the first inning has Jordan McClellan stole second and in doing so it led to an error allowing Sanchez to score after leading the game off with a double. Highland added another run in the first inning on a Kenneth Vega RBI single and then scored a run in the second and third innings to lead 4-0. Offense produced again for Highland in the Top of the sixth inning as Conner Fiene recorded an RBI single and Avery Miller drew a bases loaded walk for another run to give the Scotties the 6-0 lead. OKWU JV got on the board in the bottom of the sixth tightening up the game with a four run inning making it 6-4 entering the seventh. Another OKWU JV allowed the Scotties to get an insurance run in the Top of the seventh and it proved to be a big run as OKWU JV scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh but Highland held on for the 7-6 win. 

Scotties had 12 hits in the win led by Sanchez who tallied a 3-5 day with a double and run scored, while Fiene was 3-4 at the plate with an RBI and walk. Vega had two hits and an RBI, while McClellan scored three runs in the contest and the Scotties as a team had six steals. On the mound Dalton Burt tossed three innings as the starter and gave up just two hits, a walk and hit batter, while striking out one earning the win, while Nick Schiffner tossed the final inning and a third to earn the save. 

Highland is scheduled to open KJCCC play this week with a series against Allen County Community College but the weather will likely lead to more changes for the Scottie baseball schedule; stay tuned to Scottieathletics.com for updates.
