Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mike Smith

Highland Women Claim Win Over MCC to Remain Unbeaten

It wasn't the prettiest of games on the hardwood but the #3 Highland Women's basketball team picked up the 86-45 win over Metropolitan Community College to remain unbeaten on the season by using a strong first quarter to propel themselves to earn the win moving to 6-0.

The game started off slow with the Scotties just going 1-8 from the floor early and MCC getting their first points of the game from the free throw line and struggling to get shot opportunities. The Scotties then found a bit of a groove and started to knock down shots with Janiya Davis and Tiana Gipson leading the charge and push the lead to double figures for the first time at 15-4 and didn't look back from that point on leading 28-8 at the end of the first quarter. MCC's shooting woes continued the entire first quarter as their first bucket in the contest didn't come 22.6 seconds left in the frame.

Second quarter was much of the same has Highland grew their lead out and used double figure performances by both Davis and Gipson to lead 54-21 at intermission as they had 18 and 17 points at the half. The contest was muddy up further in the second half with fouls and turnovers as both teams struggled holding onto the ball but the Scotties were more efficient with their shots guiding them to the 86-45 win.

Highland controlled many facets of the game shooting 57.7% from the floor while holding MCC to 23.9% shooting and the Scotties won the rebounding margin 41-22. Scotties also nailed eight three pointers shooting 44.4% from behind the arc.

Davis paced Highland on the evening finishing with 20 points on 7-8 shooting and 6-7 night from the free throw, while adding eight rebounds and five assists. Gipson had a career best 18 points draining four three's on the night and finishing 6-7 from the floor. Both Khaliah Hines and Lisa Gbonwei each recorded nine points in the Scottie win.
