Highland Softball Splits KJCCC Doubleheader With Labette

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After rainy weather pushed the doubleheader back from Saturday the #8 Highland softball team hit the diamond for the first time at home this season when they hosted Labette for a KJCCC doubleheader.

The Scotties won game one in just five innings claiming a 12-4 win, but game two as a different story a Highland fought from behind but was unable to complete the comeback falling 8-4. The 1-1 showing moves the Scotties to 12-6 on the season and 2-2 in KJCCC action on the season.

Game 1 vs Labette
Highland opened the day with a strong offensive showing as the first four girls reached on hits in the bottom of the first inning after Bailey Lacy and the Scottie defense set Labette down in order in the top of the first. Allyssa Griggs put forth an RBI single to score Isabella Konieczka for the initial run of the game, while Hannah Schmidt had an RBI single in the inning also and two runs also scored on a Labette error. Scotties tacked on two more runs in the second off a Chevelle Sartin two-run homer.

Labette got on the board in the third with a pair of runs on two walks and two hits but Highland answered with another in the third for themselves and three more in the fourth on three hits and two Labette errors with a bunt RBI single by Alyssa Wesley highlighting the frame. Up 10-2 the Scotties were three outs away from the win in the fifth but Labette tallied a pair of runs to push the game to the bottom of the fifth were the Scotties would get a few runners on and with a two RBI single by Alexis Hodadpp finished game one with a 12-4 five inning win.

Sartin led the Scotties at the plate going 3-4 with a home run, two RBI's and three runs scored, while Griggs was 2-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and was hit by a pitch and Hodapp went 2-3 with a walk, two RBI's and reached on an error. Both Schmidt and Konieczka each had two runs scored. Bailey Lacy inside the circle tossed all five innings giving up four runs on five hits, three walks and struckout two for the win.

Game 2 vs Labette
Labette took the early lead against the Scotties in game two with a run in the first inning by the Scotties got a RBI single by Allyssa Griggs in the bottom of the first to score Isabella Konieczka who led the inning off with a walk to tie the game at 1-1. However the Scotties looked to take the lead in the first but left the bases loaded in the inning and would strand runners over the course of the contest.

Labette regained the lead in the second with four runs including a home run in the frame and tacked on three more in the sixth with another home run in the contest. Highland continued to generate base runners in the contest but came up short of scoring until the bottom of the sixth using and error and two hits to load the bases and then a bases loaded walk by Cassidy Greer scored a run along with a sac-fly by Alexis Hodapp making it 8-3.

Scotties down to their final three outs of the contest got some help from Labette with a pair of errors and a walk for some base runners in the inning but only managed to score one run and fell 8-4 for the split with Labette.

At the plate Konieczka scored two runs and had a pair of walks, while Chevelle Sartin was 2-5 and reached on an error. Hodapp had another multi-hit game finishing 2-3 with an RBI, while Elizabeth Hays reached base twice on errors. Inside the circle Kelly Uthe tossed five innings giving up five runs on seven hits and struckout three, while Sarah Bond tossed the final two innings.

Scotties are back in action on Wednesday, March 27th at home in a KJCCC doubleheader with Hesston starting at 2:00pm as the games were moved up from Thursday due to forecasted rain.
