Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mike Smith

Highland Women Top Washburn JV In Closest Game of the Season

Third straight year and seventh time in eight seasons under Head Coach BJ Smith the Highland Women's basketball team has opened the season 7-0 as the Scotties won their toughest battle to date this season picking up a 89-77 road win over Washburn JV a team that beat another Jayhawk Conference team earlier in the week.

It was a see-saw affair early on with Highland holding the slim 21-19 lead after the first quarter but behind a 20-15 second quarter the Ichabods snagged the lead and put the Scotties behind at halftime for the first time this season trailing 39-36. The contest was continually marred by fouls with 60+ free throws shot in the contest between the two teams but the Scotties battled to regain the lead in the third quarter holding only a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter. Scotties finished the game strong with their best shooting performance of the season as a team and posted 35 points in the fourth quarter to ultimately claim a double digit 89-77 win.

Freshman, Tiana Gipson put together a career best performance dropping 32 points on 9-11 shooting including 6-8 from three-point range and 8-9 free throws. Sophomore, Tuana Dinc also notched a career high with 21 points on 9-14 shooting and added seven rebounds, while fellow sophomore, Stefania Chiziane continued to fill the stat sheet posting 16 points, five rebounds and six assists. Freshman, Armani Turner added 12 points as the quartet of double figure scorers accounted for all by eight points of the teams 89 on the night.

As a team the Scotties had their best shooting night of the season shooting 63.8% from the floor notching their third performance of the season of 60+% shooting from the floor as a team. Defensively the Scotties held their sixth opponent under 40% shooting this season.
