But for a penalty kick, Kansas City Kansas Community College's women's soccer team would still be unbeaten.

The kick with just 14:31 left, allowed No. 11 Butler to escape the young Blue Devils with a 1-1 tie in El Dorado Wednesday. The tie left KCKCC with a 3-0-1 mark overall and 2-0-1 Jayhawk Conference record heading into a home doubleheader with Coffeyville Sept. 6. The women's teams will kick off at 5 p.m. with the men following at 7:30 p.m.

KCKCC took a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the second half when freshman Jaycee Schumann of Topeka Seaman and sophomore Mia Hurt of Omaha maneuvered behind the Grizzly defense. Schumann set up Hurt with a pass to the front center of the goal, where Hurt punched it in. Butler got the tying goal on Saki Matsumoto's penalty kick into the left corner of the net after she was fouled in the box.

The tie came after KCKCC had controlled much of the first 75 minutes, launching 19 shots including nine on goal to just four shots on goal for the Grizzlies. Three of those were turned back by sophomore goalkeeper Karli Angle.

"We played well, especially facing a nationally ranked team for the first time," said KCKCC Coach Shawn Uhlenhake. "We created opportunities but missed some chances early. Both our midfielders and defense played well, and Karli Angle had some really big saves. We just need to capitalize on our opportunities."
