Highland Baseball Picks Up Win Over Rockhurst JV

For the seventh time in the last 10 games the Highland baseball team found themselves etching a tally in the win column as they picked up a 9-8 win over Rockhurst JV in 10 innings on Wednesday evening.

Rockhurst scratched a run across in the top of the first inning putting the Scotties behind early in the matchup and while Highland was able to get some runners in scoring position in the first and second inning it remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the third the Scotties broke through by batting around to score four runs on four hits and two Rockhurst errors. An error helped the Scotties score their first run of the game to tie the contest, then Kenneth Vega notched an RBI single and Nash Nickle had a 2 RBI single, making it 4-1.

The lead was short lived for the Scotties as Rockhurst put together four hits and used a Scottie error to score three runs and tie the game up at 4-4. It remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when Victor Sanchez smacked a solo home run to open the inning giving the lead back Highland and the Scotties tacked on three runs to double their output and lead 8-4. Both Vega and Nickle each had run producing hits in the Scottie four inning again.

In the top of the ninth Rockhurst worked the bases loaded against the Scotties on three walks and needing one more out Highland saw Rockhurst blast a ball out of the ballpark for a grand slam to tie the game at 8-8 and force extra innings.

After sitting down Rockhurst in order in the top of the tenth the Scotties got a leadoff double by Jordan McClellan and he was moved to third on a sac-bunt by Jackson Rehkow and then scored the winning run on a sac-fly by Justin Rieschick to lift the Scotties to the 9-8 win in 10 innings.

At the plate the Scotties had 15 hits as a team led by a three-hit game for McClellan and Vega, while four other Scotties had two hits. McClellan was 3-5 with three runs scored and a double, Vega went 3-5 with two runs scored with an RBI. Nickle had a 2-5 day with three RBI's and Rieschick, Sanchez and Dalton Burt each had two hits.

Blake Robinson tossed two innings as the starter, while Drake Seetin was strong in the five innings giving up three runs with only one earned on eight hits and six strikeouts. Brendon Bond tossed the final three innings of action.

The win moves the Scotties to 9-32 on the season with nine games remaining in the regular season. Highland will hit the diamond again on Thursday, April 25th when they open a KJCCC series with Neosho County at home starting at 1:00pm.
