Highland Baseball Picks Up Pair of KJCCC Wins Over Labette

Highland baseball team broke through on Thursday at home picking up their first Conference wins of the season and in the process snapped a 21-game Conference losing streak as the Scotties won 7-6 in walk-off fashion and 13-2 in seven innings over Labette.

Scotties wasted no time to get on the board scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Highland opened the inning and with a single and walk and Nick Schifftner notched a RBI single to score the first Scottie run. Alejandro Pina poked a ball into right field knocking in a run and then another scored on an error on the same play making 3-0. The lead double for Highland in the bottom of the second as Schifftner blasted a two-run home run and Victor Sanchez had an RBI single.

It remained 6-0 until the top of the fifth when Labette broke through plating three runs and then tallied two and the game entered the top of the seventh 6-5 Highland. In the top of the seventh Labette blasted a solo home run to tie the game and worked two more runners on but the Scotties got out of the inning with the game tied 6-6.

After Jason Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the seventh Mason Tittle entered to pinch run and an intentional walk and another walk then worked the bases loaded with one out. Schifftner came up and registered his fourth hit of the game this being a RBI single to walk-off the game for the Scotties to win 7-6 over Labette giving Highland their first KJCCC win of the season.

Leading the offense was Schifftner in the win as he was 4-4 with a home run, four RBI's, two runs scored and a walk, while Pina was 2-3 with a RBI and walk. Conner Fiene finished 1-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Justin Rieschick went six innings as the starter giving up six runs on 10 hits and struckout eight, while Austin Gottula tossed the final inning taking over in the seventh and earned the win.

Game two saw Labette take the early lead behind a two-run homer in the top of the first but the Scotties had a big answer to pick up starter Jake Schrock. In the bottom of the first eight came to the plate for Highland to score four runs as Jordan McClellan led the inning off with a double and both Fiene and Jackson Rehkow drew walks to load the bases. After the bases were loaded Pina emptied them blasting the Scotties second grand slam of the season to make it 4-0. Schrock then responded himself as he would only give three more base runners over the next five innings.

In the Highland double their opponent scoring four more runs as Rehkow was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then a Pina single scored two and a wild pitch added another and Highland led 8-2 after two innings. Scotties tacked on runs in the third and fifth innings on a solo home run by Sanchez and RBI single by McClellan. Bottom of the sixth Schifftner tattooed his second home run of the day and the Scotties added two more to lead 13-2.

Three outs away from the win in the seventh Highland saw Labette work a few bases runners but a called strike three for a strikeout got Highland their final out to give them the 13-2 seven inning win.

McClellan went 3-5 with a double, two runs scored and RBI, while Pina was 2-3 with a grand slam, six RBI's, two runs scored and a walk in game two. Schrock earned the win tossing six innings giving up two runs on four hits, three walks and a hit batter, while striking out five. Brendon Bond tossed the final inning in the win.

With the win the Scotties move to 7-33 on the season and 2-20 in KJCCC play, snapping a long Conference losing streak. Highland will be back in action on Saturday, April 20th when they continue their series with Labette with a doubleheader in Parsons, KS.
