Highland Baseball Wins High Scoring Affair With Rockhurst JV

In want proved to be a high scoring affair the Highland baseball team picked up their second win of the season as they topped Rockhurst University JV on Tuesday in a single nine inning contest winning 15-13.

After two scoreless innings of baseball Rockhurst took the early lead by plating a pair of runs in the third and then two more in the fourth to lead 4-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning. The bottom of the fourth is when the Scottie offense broke through as Dalton Burt got things rolling with a walk followed by a double by Conner Fiene and then a RBI groundout by Jackson Rehkow. Alejandro Pina tallied an RBI single in the fourth and the Scotties added another on a sacrifice fly.

The fifth inning saw more offense by both teams as Rockhurst extended their lead back out by scoring three runs making it 7-3 but the Scotties tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. Fiene highlighted the Scotties four run fifth with a two RBI double his second extra base hit of the day.

Rockhurst once again had an answer in the seventh inning by tallying another three run inning but the Scotties swung the lead into their favor in the bottom of the seventh and never gave it back scoring eight runs in the inning. Pina got the scoring going in the inning on a RBI single scoring Burt, while Jason Gonzalez walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run and Kenneth Vega had a sac-fly for a run. The big blow for the Scotties in the inning came from Victor Sanchez who blasted a grand slam giving Highland their first lead, while a Rehkow RBI single added another for Highland.

Up 15-10 the Scotties saw Rockhurst tallying a run in the eighth and then worked a bases loaded situation in the ninth but only managed two runs and Highland preserved their lead for the 15-13 win.

A 4-4 day at the plate by Victor Sanchez with three doubles, a grand slam and four RBI's led the Scotties at the plate who had 14 hits. Fiene notched a 3-5 day with three runs scored, two RBI's and two doubles, while Pina was 2-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Jordan McClellan added a two-hit game and Burt had a hit and three walks.

Six pitchers saw action for the Scotties on the day with most of them tossing less than two innings of work. In relief Dylan Arnett earned the win in one and two-third innings giving a run on one-hit and a walk, while striking out three. Nick Schifftner tossed the ninth inning to earn the save.

With the win the Scotties move to 2-22 on the season and now gear up for more KJCCC later in the week as they will play Cowley in a four-game series.
