Softball splits conference opener with Garden City

GAME ONE

Once down 5-0 after two frames, the Beavers scored 10 unanswered runs of their own, taking the former half of Wednesday's doubleheader against Garden City by a score of 10-5.

Celeste Chavez, Kylie Fletcher, McKenzie Manriquez, and Nikole Puetz each knocked a pair of hits, making up for a third of the Beavers hit total. Fletcher and Puetz accounted for both of Pratt's extra-base hits, as Puetz was also responsible for a game-high four RBI. Alyssa Reyes gave the Beavers a gritty seven innings in the complete-game win, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, three walks and a strikeout, her first as a Beaver.

The right-handed Reyes fought through a homer-happy 2nd inning, allowing a three-run and solo home runs to the middle of the Broncbusters lineup. That would be all Garden City would be able to muster however, as Reyes settled into the ballgame.

Trailing 5-0 entering the bottom of the 4th inning, the Beavers began the process of chipping away. A Fletcher walk to leadoff the inning would kickstart a three-run rally with Manriquez, Puetz, Jessica Dye all driving in runs. Also taking advantage of Garden City mistakes, Pratt made use of three Broncbusters errors en route to retaking a 8-5 lead. The Beavers then plated a pair of insurance runs in the 6th inning to cushion the lead to 10-5. Reyes closed the show for Pratt, retiring three straight batters in the 7th inning after a leadoff single.

GAME TWO

Starting the second game in the circle for Pratt was again Alyssa Reyes, though fatigue saw her last only 3.1 innings in the second game of the doubleheader, where the Beavers lost 11-7.

Reyes allowed nine runs, much to the cause of five walks, as well as nine hits with only one strikeout. Briana Aragon was called in for relief, giving Coach Melvin a solid 3.2 innings of two-run ball.

Celeste Chavez, McKenzie Manriquez, Alyssa Reyes and Sami Deford all finished with multiple hits, though the loudest came from Pratt's anchor at first base. Marissa Reina lined a two-run home run over the right-center field fence, the first of her collegiate career. As well as Reina, Rayne Cottle also led the team with two RBI.

A 10-1 Garden City lead lasted until the bottom of the 5th inning, where the Beavers exploded for five much-needed runs. Capped by Reina's two-run laser shot, Kylie Fletcher, Cottle, and Manriquez were also credited with a RBI. Needing four runs over the game's final six outs, Pratt went 1-7 to officially split Wednesday's two games.

The Beavers will again be at Lemon Park on Saturday, facing the Seward County Saints at 1 PM & 3 PM.
