Highland Baseball Takes One at Labette to Win Series

After picking up the doubleheader sweep on Thursday at home the Highland baseball team continued their KJCCC series with Labette in Parsons, Kansas on Saturday and would win the series by splitting the doubleheader.

Scotties despite tying the game multiple times fell in game one 17-9 but responded to win the series by taking the final game of the four-game set winning 7-4. The series win marks the first KJCCC series win for the Highland since 2015.

Game one saw the Scotties fall behind early and have to continually come from behind in the contest as Labette tallied three runs in the first inning. Highland got on the board in the top of the second as Victor Sanchez scored Jason Gonzalez on a RBI double, but Labette answered with two runs in the bottom second. In the top of the third three straight hit batters loaded the bases for Highland and the Scotties scored on an error, single, walk and wild pitch in the inning to tie the game at 5-5. Labette however snatched the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the third and added another in the fourth.

In the fifth the Scotties once again tied the matchup with RBI singles by Nick Schifftner and Dalton Burt highlighting the inning as the Scotties scored three to make it 8-8. Labette once again answered with three in the fifth, while the Scotties got a run in the sixth but Labette sealed the game with a six run sixth and the Scotties fell 17-9 in game one of the doubleheader.

Four Scotties had multi-hit games in the loss as Jordan McClellan was 2-3 with a run scored and walk, while Schifftner went 2-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and walk. Brendon Bond posted a 2-4 contest with two runs scored, while Kenneth Vega was 2-4 with an RBI.

Highland would bounce back nicely after the loss to start the doubleheader as the Scotties in game two took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the third behind RBI singles by Jackson Rehkow and Schifftner. Labette tied the game in the bottom of the third and then plated two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. In the top of the fifth a solo home run by Schifftner drew the Scotties to within one and then another run in the sixth tied the game for the Scotties as Highland scored on a Labette error.

Scotties regained the lead in the seventh when Rehkow blasted a solo home run and the in the ninth Highland added a pair of insurance runs going on to sit Labette down in order in the bottom of the ninth for Schifftner to earn the save in relief and the Scotties pick up the 7-4 win.

The top of the order was strong for the Scotties in the win as McClellan went 2-4 with two runs scored with an RBI and walk, while Rehkow finished 2-5 with a home run, two RBI's and run scored. Schifftner finished 2-4 with three RBI's, a home run and run scored on top of finishing the game on the mound for the save. Dylan Arnett threw four scoreless innings of relief and struckout five for Highland in the win.

Highland is back in action again on Tuesday, April 23rd in Kansas City, MO as they take on Rockhurst University JV, before opening a KJCCC series with Neosho County on Thursday, April 25th at home with a doubleheader.
