Lady Indians claim first win in extra-inning thriller

DODGE CITY, Kan. It took a two-out, three run rally in the seventh inning, but the McCook Community College softball team sent the game to extra-innings and scored four times in the ninth inning to reach the win column for the first time this season in a 19-16 win over Dodge City in the second game of a Sunday double-header.

The Lady Indians held 6-5 lead in the sixth inning of the first game but lost 7-6 with a walk-off Conquistador hit in the seventh inning.

"I am so proud of these kids," said MCC Coach Kevin Kaalberg. "They continue to work and push forward and tonight down three runs with two outs and nobody on in the seventh, they showed how much fight they have."

MCC got a six-hit afternoon from Kaitlyn Lord, (Colorado Springs, Colo.) including a home run and six RBIs, with the biggest a go-ahead RBI-single in the ninth inning.

Sidney Sansregret, (Surrey, British Columbia) had three hits in both games and the Lady Indians got home runs on the afternoon from Lord, Kristen Mogan, (Richfield, Utah), Megan Blood-Smyth, (Thornton, Colo.) and Kassandra Orr, (Victoria, British Columbia).

After pitching the first game, sophomore Karleigh Kleinknecht, (Cozad/Gothenburg High School) came on to pitch the final 5.1 innings of the second game to pick up the win, striking out eight, and allowing six hits and three earned runs.

The Conquistadors are 2-2 on the season.

MCC goes to 1-9 on the year. The Lady Indians will have a 10-day break in the schedule before returning home Feb. 26 to take on Colby (1 p.m.) followed with the opening of Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference play Feb. 29 against Central Community College (1 p.m.) and Southeast Community College (1 p.m.) on March 1.

GAME 1 -- Dodge City 8, McCook CC 7: After a scoreless first, the Lady Indians took a 1-0 lead on a two-out double by Kaitlyn Kleinknecht, (freshman, Cozad/Gothenburg High School) to bring home Alice Midiri, (freshman, Condove, Italy) who doubled earlier in the inning.
Dodge City scored three runs in the bottom of the second by the Lady Indians responded with three runs in the third to take a 4-3 lead. A double by freshman Sidney Sansregret and a two-run home run from freshman Kristen Mogan tied the game then a Conquistador error and an RBI-single from freshman Kaitlyn Lord gave MCC the 4-3 lead.
The Lady Indians added another run in the fourth with singles by Kleniknecht and Sansregret and an RBI groundout from sophomore Jade Hollands, (Effingham, Kan.). Dodge City scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 5-5.
MCC came back with a run in the fifth to lead 6-5 but the Conquistadors scored a run in the sixth to knot the game at 6-6 and won it on in the seventh inning on a hit batter and a double.
MCC had 12 hits in the game with three each by Sandsregret and Lord. Kleinknecht had a pair of hits.
Sophomore pitcher Karleigh Kleinknecht, (Cozad/Gothenburg High School) went the distance in the pitching circle allowing 11 hits, three walks and striking out seven.

GAME 2 McCook CC 19, Dodge City 16 (9 innings): After starting the game with a four-run first, MCC gave up five in the bottom of the inning, The Lady Indians took a 6-5 lead in the second then added three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to lead 11-5 but Dodge City posed a six-spot in the fourth inning to tie the game at 11 and added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a three-run lead into the seventh inning.
With two outs the Lady Indians rallied for three runs on five straight hits to tie the game at 14-14. Both teams scored runs in the eighth inning to send the game to the ninth 15-15.
With bases loaded, Kaitlyn Lord singled, Kassandra Orr delivered an RBI groundout, and Alice Midri delivered a two-run single to put the Lady Indians up 19-15.
Sansregret, Orr, Lord and Megan Bloodsmyth all had three hit games. Lord drive in five runs, Orr four, and Bloodsmyth three.
Freshmen pitchers Anna Wilcox, (Victoria, British Columbia) and Melanie Fye, (Ault, Colo.) went the first 3.2 innings and combined to give up 11 runs on eight hits.
