Cavaliers drop five-set battle with Cowley Wednesday Night

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College and Cowley College volleyball teams provided a five-set thriller Wednesday night in a battle of top-ranked programs, with the No. 7 Cavaliers falling 3-2 (25-23, 15-25, 26-24, 15-25, 13-15) to the No. 3 Tigers at JCCC Gymnasium.

The loss drops the Cavaliers (27-3/6-1) into a tie for second place with Neosho County (17-6/7-1) in the KJCCC D-II standings, with Cowley (26-0/7-0) taking over sole possession of first place with two weeks remaining in the regular season. JCCC hosts Neosho County on Wednesday, October 25. 

Sophomore outside/right side hitter Sarina Ulberg (Independence, Mo.) nearly recorded a double-double in kills and blocks, finishing with a team high 12 kills and nine blocks. 

Freshman middle hitter Chloe Carlgren (Auburn, Kan.) had the best kill percentage of JCCC's hitters at .417. She tallied six total kills to go along with seven blocks. 

On defense the Cavaliers had three player finish in double digits for digs in the match. Freshman Emily Silvers (Lawrence, Kan.) led the way with 14, followed by sophomore Sydney Fiatte (Shawnee, Kan.) with 11 and freshman Kennedy Smalley (Harrisonville, Mo.) with 10. 

Fiatte also posted double figures in assists with a team high 20 to post her second double-double of the year.  Freshman Wren VanCleave (Bonner Springs, Kan.) also finished in double figures in assists with 17.

Johnson County is back in action on Wednesday, October 18 in Parsons, Kan., to take on Labette in a KJCCC D-II match.
