Baldridge hits walk-off HR in game one; Scotties split with Reivers

After playing their first 11 games of the season on the road, the Scottie softball team finally had the opportunity to play on their home field Friday afternoon as they hosted the Reivers of Iowa Western.

Highland split with the Reivers winning a thriller in game one with a Kendra Baldridge three-run walk-off homerun to win 11-9 while game two went in favor of the Reivers with a 10-9 final.

Game One:

The Reivers jumped all over Highland in the first quarter scoring six runs off five hits and one Highland error.

The Scotties settled in after the first half inning and began to chip away at the Reiver lead. Highland answered with two runs in the first, and then a run each of the next three innings to get within one run of Iowa Western heading into the fifth.

Both teams were scoreless in the fifth, then Iowa Western extended their lead in the sixth scoring two more runs of RBI's from Valencia and Zadina, Scotties trailed 8-5.

Kendra Baldridge hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth to get back within one. A Sydney Anderson walk and Aubry Hernandez hit by pitch would put two runners on with Alexis Hodapp coming to the plate. Hodapp grounded out to third but was able to knock in Anderson from third to tie the game at 8-8.

Iowa Western took back the lead 9-8 in the top of the seventh off a Gregory solo homerun. Highland headed into the bottom of the inning knowing they had to score at least one to keep playing. Alyssa Wesley hit a double to left followed by a Sam Moran walk brining Kendra Baldridge back to the plate. Baldridge stole the show hitting a three-run homerun to win the game in walk-off fashion and the Scotties won 11-9.

Badridge finished the game 3-3 with two homeruns, five RBI's and three runs scored. Sydney Anderson went 2-2 with two walks and two RBI's and two runs scored. Kelly Uthe got the win for Highland pitching 6.1 innings allowing three runs off nine hits. She walked one and struck out five.

Game Two:

Iowa Western started the game with a Lee two-run homerun to take a 2-0 lead over Highland. The Scotties would answer scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead.

The Reivers scored two more in the second after another two-run homerun, this time by Chisholm. Again, the Scotties answered with three runs of their own. Sydney Anderson hit a two RBI double and Aubry Hernandez hit an RBI single in the inning to give Highland a 6-4 lead.

Highland added two more runs in the bottom of the third as the Iowa Western pitcher walked in two runners, Scotties led 8-4 after three.

The Reivers would come alive in the next three innings scoring three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth and allowing only one Highland run during that time. The Reivers took a 10-9 lead going into the last inning.

Julisa Ortega held the Reivers scoreless in the seventh setting the Scotties offense up to tie or win the game. With two outs, the tying run would get on base as Kendra Baldridge walked. Sydney Anderson hit a high fly ball to deep center field but the centerfielder made a nice catch at the wall to end the game in favor of the Reivers 10-9.

Sydney Anderson went 1-3 in game two with three walks and three RBI's. Kami Zimmerman finished 2-3 with two doubles and two RBI's.

The Scotties are now 11-2 and will take on conference opponent Kansas City Kansas at home on Tuesday, march 13 at 2:00pm & 4:00pm at Scottie Park.
