Coffeyville uses a late push to slip past Lady Tigers 66-60

In a game that featured nine lead changes and five ties, the No. 24-ranked Coffeyville Community College Lady Red Ravens scored the final seven points of Saturday's game at Cowley College to defeat the Lady Tigers 66-60.

The Teams were tied 17-17 at the end of the first quarter, with sophomore Ndack Mbengue leading Cowley with 10 points. With the Lady Tigers making only 3-of-16 shots in the second quarter, Coffeyville took a 34-27 halftime lead behind 13 first-half points from Tetona Woods-Blackowl.

Cowley bounced back to shoot 50 percent in the third quarter and out-scored Coffeyville 22-14 while taking a 49-48 lead into the final quarter of play.

Cowley would lead by as many as five points (55-50) in the fourth quarter and clung to a one-point lead (60-59) following a basket by freshman Destiny Yates with 2:15 remaining. However, Coffeyville would score the game's final seven points as they held on for the 66-60 road win.

"We played hard, we just did not get it done," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Missing starters Zuzanna Komor and Aiyanna Big Man, Cowley used only six players in Saturday's contest and got no points from its bench players.

Mbengue recorded her third-straight double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Yates added 15 points and five assists, while Anna Przyszlak finished with 13 points and nine rebounds before fouling out late in the contest. Przyszlak and Hattie Pyle combined to make only 5-of-30 field goal attempts in the loss.

Woods-Blackowl led Coffeyville with 18 points and eight rebounds as the Red Ravens improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the Jayhawk Conference.

After winning its first seven games, Cowley has dropped two straight to fall to 1-2 in conference play. The Lady Tigers will look to get back on track when they play at Barton Community College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Cougars are 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

"Barton is really good, so we must be ready to play," Clark said.

Vera Ojenuwa leads Barton with an average of 11.7 points and 10.4 rebounds, while Anna Przszlak leads Cowley with an average of 15.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.
