Kansas City sweeps season-series with Lady Tigers with another one-goal victory

Having already defeated the 17th-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team by a 3-2 score earlier this season in Arkansas City, the No. 16-ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College Lady Blue Devils completed the season-sweep with a 2-1 home win over the Lady Tigers on Saturday.

With the loss, Cowley remains in fourth place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 8-3-4. Kansas City (12-3-2) moves into second place in the conference with a record of 10-3-2.

On Saturday, Kansas City took a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal from Mia Hurt. The Lady Blue Devils' lead would grow to 2-0 when Jordan Bedard scored only five minutes into the second half. Both goals were assisted by Jaycee Schumann.

Cowley would cut its deficit in half when Fenja Leibner headed in a direct kick from Lea Evin with 23 minutes remaining. It was the third goal of the season for Leibner and the third assist from Evin.

The Lady Tigers continued to put pressure on Kansas City, hoping to tie the game, but Lady Blue Devil goalkeeper Karli Angle stopped six of the seven shots she faced in the 2-1 win.

Cowley was without its leading point producer in midfielder Nanaka Inaba. Fellow midfielder Sara Espinosa also battled injury during the game, leaving Cowley to make adjustments to its midfield.

"We came out flat in the first half, but the second half was a different story," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We had several chances but could not get the tying goal."

Cowley will wrap up play in the conference by hosting 11th-ranked Hutchinson Community College Monday at 2 p.m. The Lady Tigers won 1-0 at Hutchinson on September 23.

"This game will determine our seeding for the playoffs and is a game we want to win," dos Santos said. "Hutchinson will come ready to play."
