Highland Football Falls to Iowa Western on the Road in Regular Season Finale

Box Score Looking for a big win and an opportunity to put themselves in a better position for a bid to a bowl game the #15 Highland football team traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa on Saturday and took on #3 Iowa Western.

The contest proved to a tough one for the Scotties and behind unfortunate miscues in the game Highland fell 34-7 to wrap up the regular season.

Scotties started off the game making a big play early as Damarion Williams got pressure on TJ Starks the quarterback of Iowa Western and forced a bad throw that Donnell Lowery picked off setting up Highland in Iowa Western territory. Highland was unable to capitalize on the turnover and the game remained scoreless. Iowa Western would be the first to get points on the board putting together an 11-play drive that spanned 80 yards and just under six minutes left in the first quarter Starks hit JaVonte Richardson for a 15-yard touchdown pass and the Scotties fell down 7-0.

Highland would have an opportunity to tie the game as the Scotties were driving early in the second quarter but an early snap bounced off quarterback, Avery McCall and the fumble was picked up by Iowa Western as the Scotties were inside the 10-yard line.

The next score of the game came when Iowa Western pinned Highland deep and forced Scottie punt was ultimately blocked and grabbed out of the air and returned into the endzone for a Reivers touchdown. The extra point was botched but the Reivers led 13-0 and then with just over a minute left in the first half Ryan Schemtob could not handle a low snap when he was in to punt and was tackled setting up Iowa Western with a short field. The Reivers two plays later scored on a 17-yard touchdown run by Starks and with the extra point carried a 20-0 lead into halftime.

Scotties offense which had under 100 yards in the first half started to find some life in the second half but still had struggles seeing another drive end in the redzone because of a turnover in the third quarter. While Iowa Western in the third had a 13-play 65 yard drive for a Nyfease West one-yard touchdown run making 27-0 entering the fourth quarter.

Another fumble by McCall early in the fourth quarter was picked up by Iowa Western and this time returned 40+ yards by Kalen Jennings for another Reiver touchdown putting the Scotties down 34-0.
Highland's first and only score of the game came after a -16 yard punt by Iowa Western gave the Scotties a short field setting them up in the redzone. McCall connected with Javon Henderson for a three-yard touchdown pass making it 34-7.

The Scotties finished with just 166 yards of total offense but the Highland defense held Iowa Western under 300 total yards for the game. McCall finished the game going 14-30 for 122 yards with a touchdown, while Bernard Porter had three catches for 49 yards and Justin Ruiz accounted for 67 yards on 12 touches. Defensively Reco Hannah recorded 14 tackles, while Lowery had nine tackles and two interceptions. Williams finished 1.5 sacks and six total tackles in the loss for Highland.

Highland wraps up the regular season with a 6-4 record with all four loss to teams ranked currently 14th or better including three losses to teams ranked in the Top five when game was played. Scotties now await the announcement of bowl games as they hope to earn a bid for postseason action.
