Sudden Death Overtime Goal Lifts KCKCC in Playoff Opener 1-0

Nice Mihala launched the biggest kick of his life to Jacob Thomas, who converted it into the game's only goal in Kansas City Kansas Community College's 1-0 overtime win at Dodge City Saturday.

A freshman defender from Essonne, France, Mihala's 40-yard kick from beyond midfield easily cleared the last Dodge City defender when Olathe Northwest's Thomas took it in full stride and blasted it past hard-charging Conquistador goalkeeper Eric Zalaya for the 1-0 win.

The sudden death goal came with 8:02 gone in the first 10-minute overtime period and advanced the Blue Devils (7-5-3) into the Region VI playoff quarterfinals at Jayhawk champion Barton Wednesday. KCKCC handed Barton (16-1-3) its only conference loss Oct. 10 after the two teams had tied 1-1 in Great Bend.

"Our players showed a lot of patience throughout the game and were rewarded in the end," KCKCC Coach Ruben Rodriguez said.

The Blue Devil defense led by Captian Rory Stenhouse was near perfect, allowing only two shots on goal, both of which were turned away by goalkeeper Franco Briani Brunoro. The Blue Devils had six of 10 shots on goal.
