Highland Women Cap Season With Tough Loss to KCK in Region Championship

In a Region that featured four Top 10 teams in the Nation the #6 Highland women's basketball team was one of the final two standing competing with #7 Kansas City Kansas for the Region VI Championship on Tuesday night.

The Scotties were looking for back-to-back Region titles and trips to Nationals but came up a bit short falling 84-71 to KCK. The loss wraps up the season for Highland as the Scotties finish the year 24-5 in the eighth season under the guidance of Head Coach, BJ Smith.

After the initial bucket of the game for the Scotties, KCK dropped a pair of three-pointers and worked to a 9-4 and Scotties used an early timeout just two minutes into the game. Highland ended the first quarter on a positive note with a Stefania Chiziane three-pointer but trailed 19-14. While the Scotties kept the game close the cold shooting continued for Highland as they headed into halftime down 35-35-26 shooting just 28.6% from the floor in the first half.

In the second half KCK used their edge on the boards to aide a 13-4 run during the third quarter to grow the deficit for the Scotties to 16-points at 50-34 and by the end of the third quarter Highland trailed 61-44 as KCK outscored the Scotties 26-18 in the third. Highland continued to battle in the fourth quarter cutting in to the KCK lead but were unable to ultimately complete the comeback falling 84-71.

Highland finished the game just 33.3% from the floor but managed to force 25 turnovers on KCK in the contest. Scotties struggled on the boards being out rebounded 54-30 in the loss.

Chiziane led the Scotties with 25 points going 9-11 from the free throw line, while adding nine rebounds and three steals. Armani Turner chipped in 12 points, while Janiya Davis posted an 11 point and seven rebound game.
