Highland Softball Snags Three More Wins In Tripleheader on Wednesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3  The #14 ranked Highland softball team continues stretched their win streak to nine-straight behind a sweep of a tripleheader on Wednesday as they continued action on their Alabama road trip.

Scotties started the day by beating Carl Sandburg out of Illinois in a pair of games winning 12-5 and 9-3 as the games were played in Brewton, Alabama at Coastal Alabama-Brewton which is who the Scotties played in the final game of the tripleheader and beat 10-6.

Game 1 vs Carl Sandburg
Highland got the offense rolling early batting all nine in the first inning of game one versus Carl Sandburg and getting RBI double's from Alexis Hodapp and Alyssa Wesley to help score four runs in the inning. In the bottom of the first the Scotties would face some adversity as starting pitcher Kennedi Ratcliff took a line drive off the wrist and had to leave the game just a few pitches in and Carl Sandburg cut the lead in half at 4-2. In top second Highland answered with two runs and Allyssa Griggs answered the call to step in the circle to take over. Scotties led 7-3 entering the bottom of the sixth when Carl Sandburg worked the bases loaded but only managed one run as Sarah Bond entered the game and recorded a hung strikeout for the final out of the inning. Highland rekindle the offense from the first inning in the seventh batting around and scoring five runs led by a solo home run by Hodapp to lead the inning off, while Isabella Konieczka had a two RBI double and the Scotties went on to win 12-5.

Offensively the Scotties pounded out 15 hits in the contest led by Chevelle Sartin who was 3-4 with three runs scored and a walk. Konieczka added a 2-4 performance with two runs score, two RBI, a double, reach on an error and walk, while Hodapp went 2-4 with a home run, double, two runs scored and two RBI. Cassidy Greer and Kami Zimmerman each notched a pair of hits also. In the circle Griggs tossed five and two-thirds innings giving up four runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batter, while striking out two. Bond finished the game tossing one and one-third innings giving up one run on one hit and struckout two.

Game 2 vs Carl Sandburg
Carl Sandburg took the early lead in game two as the blasted a two run homer in the top of the first inning but the Scotties had an answer with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2. The lead swung the way of Highland in the bottom of the second after a leadoff double by Lora Shinn and she scored on a sac-fly from Alley Rickel to make it 3-2. Carl Sandburg tied in up at 3-3 in the third behind three hits and a Highland error, but the big offensive output of the game came in the fifth inning for Highland to regain control as the Scotties scored four. A two RBI single by Shinn and two RBI double by Allyssa Griggs highlighted the fifth for Highland. Scotties tacked on two more for good measure and won 9-3 over Carl Sandburg.

Sarah Bond started game two and tossed all seven innings giving up just three runs on 10 hits, with no walks and struckout three earning the win. At the plate Isabella Konieczka went 3-4 with two runs scored, three stolen bases and reached on an error, while Shinn finished 3-3 with two run scored and two RBI.

Game vs Coastal Alabama-Brewton
The third game of the day for Highland opened up with the third half inning that the Scotties batted all nine in the lineup as the Scotties took an early 3-0 lead getting RBI singles from Allyssa Griggs, Kelly Uthe and an bases loaded walk from Sirena Salazar. Brewton picked up two runs on their own in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2 but another RBI single by Griggs in the second scored Chevelle Sartin who lead the inning off with a double making it 4-2. Sartin then had a two RBI double in the third helping Highland score three runs in the half inning and the Scotties tallied a another run in the fourth, fifth and seventh, while Coastal Alabama got four in the fifth to try and tighten the game up but behind 17 hits Highland picked up the 10-6 win.

Inside the circle Bailey Lacy started and went four innings giving up six runs on six hits, four walks and a hit batter, while striking out two, while Uthe tossed the final three innings giving up just two hits as she went a perfect 4-4 at the plate in the contest with two RBI, a run scored and hit by pitch. Griggs was 3-5 with three RBI and two runs scored and Sartin had three doubles and three runs scored.

Overall on the day the Scotties put together a strong day of play and the game ball for the day went to Lora Shinn for her performance on the field and off the field helping the pitchers prepare for the games.

A 3-0 day moved the Scotties to 7-0 on the Alabama road trip and 9-3 on the season as the team will wrap up the road trip on Friday with a doubleheader in Perkinston, Mississippi playing at noon and 2:00pm against Mississippi Gulf Coast.
