Blue Devils Get Fifth Consecutive Victory with Win Over Fort Scott, 85-78

The Kansas City Kansas Community College men's basketball team (19-9, 10-2) beat Fort Scott (19-9, 7-5), 85-78 Feb. 21 at Hy-Vee Arena. The Blue Devils were down 43-38 at half but would climb back in the second half for the win. Currently, the Blue Devils are at the top of the KJCCC with a conference record of 10-2. The two remaining games are against Labette (Away, 2/24) and Hesston (Home, 2/28).

Caleb Jones was the standout performer for the Blue Devils. He played 31 minutes, leading the team in scoring with an impressive 24 points. He demonstrated accuracy with 8-15 field goals, including two 3-pointers, and displayed versatility with nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. On top of that, Jones was the only player who had played more than 20 minutes and didn't have a single turnover. BJ Stewart played for 28 minutes and was the second-highest scorer with 22 points. He showcased his 3-point shooting skills, making 4 out of 8 attempts, and sunk 6 of 12 free throws. Stewart also contributed defensively with six rebounds. Mikequese Taylor was a spark off the bench playing 21 minutes, scoring 10 points and grabbing four rebounds. He also contributed with four assists. O'shawn Jones Winslow also came off the bench shooting an impressive 3 of 4 from the field finishing with nine points, six rebounds and one assist. Camron Williford had a team-high 38 minutes played for the Blue Devils and finished with eight points, four assists, three rebounds and one assist.

Denymh Smith came off the bench for Fort Scott and led the team with 19 points, shooting 8 of 17 from the field. Nickson Bess shot an impressive 5 of 7 from the field and tallied 15 points with four rebounds and two assists. Bryce Journee finished the night with 14 points and brought down two rebounds. BJ Francis led the team in assists with three and had nine points. Mustafa Mohamed shot 100 percent from the field, 3 of 3 and scored six points with one rebound.

For the game, the Blue Devils shot 48.3 percent from the field (28-58), 36.4 percent from three-point range (6-22) and 63.9 percent from the free-throw line (23-36). Fort Scott shot 46.3 percent from the field (31-67), 17.4 percent from three-point range (4-23) and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line (12-18). The game had nine lead changes and one tie. The Greyhounds led by as much as 12 points, while the Blue Devils largest lead was nine.

The next game for the Blue Devils is against the Labette Community College at 4 p.m. Feb. 24 in Parsons, Kan.
