One month, four days and 18 games into the season, Highland Softball finally hosted their first home game of the season and ended the day in exciting fashion. The Scotties swept the Reivers of Iowa Western CC winning game one 5-4 and game two 7-4, after an
Aubry Hernandez walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 7
th.
Â
GAME ONE:
Â
Game one saw Iowa Western light up the scoreboard early scoring one run in the first. Highland answered quickly with back to back homeruns from
Aubry Hernandez and
Kayla Ross giving Highland the lead 3-1 after the first inning.
Â
Western scored another run in the second inning but a
Kennadi Barron solo homerun over the center field fence bumped the Scottie lead back to two. Highland led 4-2 after two innings from Scottie Park.
Â
Western tied the game at four after scoring un-answered runs in the 4
th & 6
th innings. The game didn't stay tied very long as
Aubry Hernandez grounded out to the short scoring
Maddie Moore from third; Highland took back the lead 5-4.
Â
Western tried to mount a comeback in the top of the 7
th after getting a runner on third base with only one out.
Julisa Ortega had other plans. Ortega replaced Barron and forced two fly outs and got the save for Highland as the Scotties went onto win 5-4.
Â
GAME TWO:
Â
Iowa Western saw the ball early and jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after the first two innings. The Highland offense got it going in the bottom of the third taking advantage of a Reiver error that scored
Kennadi Barron and
Kierra Ross and a passed ball that allowed
Maddie Moore to steal home. Reivers still led 4-3.
Â
Both the Highland and Reiver defenses were at their best throughout the middle innings keeping both teams from scoring any runs. Highland had opportunities to tie the game in the 4
th and 5
th but stranded two runners both innings.
Â
Highland had one final opportunity in the bottom of the 7
th and
Aubry Hernandez came up big.
Sam Moran led off, saw four balls and the tying run was on first.
Kenzie Garvin laid down a bunt and reached first safely and moved Moran to second.
Aubry Hernandez would end the game in style hitting a three-run, walk-off home run to win the game.
Â
Highland improved to 16-4 on the year and 2-0 at home. They will travel to Overland Park, KS to take on conference opponent Johnson County CC on Tuesday, March 21 at 1:00pm & 3:00pm.
