Highland Women's Basketball Cruises Past Fort Scott in Regular Season Finale

The #7 Highland women's basketball team capped the regular season in impressive fashion by routing Fort Scott on Sophomore Day picking up the 100-61 victory.

The win moves the Scotties to 23-4 on the season and gives them a 7-3 finish in KJCCC action to tie for second in the Conference with Labette. With the win Highland has now won 37 straight games at home, 17 in a row against Fort Scott and Coach BJ Smith is 16-0 in his career against Fort Scott. The Scotties won a coin flip later in the night with Labette to secure the two seed in the Region VI Tournament.

After the game opened up tight the Scotties snagged a 12-11 lead and went on a 13-0 run to take control of the game at 25-11 with 2:04 left in the first quarter with the three-point bucket leading the charge for Highland as the Scotties went 7-11 from three-point range in the first quarter. Freshman, Tiana Gipson led the charge with a performance for the record books, as she hit multiple three's in the first quarter and tied the record for a single game with 10 three-pointers a record set by Blaize Burgess last year against Graceland.

Scotties used a 19-6 second quarter and extended their lead and went into halftime up 53-22. Fort Scott opened the second half on a 10-4 run but the Scotties would continue to the use the hot shooting from outside the arc and their big lead to cruise to the 100-61 win over the Greyhounds.

Highland in the contest shot 48.7% from the floor and 41% from three-point range draining 16 three-points in the contest, while also winning the rebounding battle over the Greyhounds 41-34 and forcing 25 Fort Scott turnovers, marking the 20th time this season the Scotties have forced 20+ turnovers in a game.

Gipson dropped a career high 38 points on as she tied the record for three-pointers in a game with 10. Janiya Davis finished with 16 points and five rebounds, while Tuana Dinc added 12 points and five rebounds and both Keondra White and Armani Turner each tallied double figures. For White it was just her second double figure game of the season as she scored 10 points and added four rebounds and three steals, while Turner had her first double figure in the last six games finishing with 10 points and adding four rebounds and four assists. Belinda Ames had a career best eight rebounds in the win, while Stefania Chiziane scored nine points and Daisah Purnell added five points.

With the win and the win of the coin flip the Scotties earned a first round bye in the Region VI Tournament and will await the winner of the Hesston and Labette game for a showdown in the Region VI Semifinals which is set for Saturday, March 2nd at 1:00pm at Ben Allen Fieldhouse.
