Defense lifts Scotties to 10th Win of the Season

The #2 ranked Highland Women's Basketball team chalked up win number 10 on the season after a 99-33 victory over Washburn Junior Varsity on Monday night.

A sub-par shooting night for the Scotties forced their defense to step it up and step it up they did. Highland jumped out to a 48-20 halftime lead after forcing 22 Ichabod turnovers, 15 of those turnovers coming off Highland steals.

Szonja Vukov and Mariane Carvalho led the offensive charge in the first half for the Scotties with 12 points apiece. Vukov also pulled down five rebounds and stole the ball five times.

Highland put on another defensive clinic in the second half holding Washburn to shooting only 19% from the field and 0% (0-13) from behind the arc. The Scotties forced another 13 turnovers in the second bringing the turnover total to 35 on the night. Highland scored 39 points off Ichabod turnovers and put up another 23 points on 2nd chance opportunities.

Freshman guard/forward Mariane Carvalho led the Scotties in scoring dropping 25 points, grabbing five rebounds and four steals. Szonja Vukov had another big performance with 18 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists. Jameka Dowell shot the ball well going 3-6 from behind the arc and finishing with 17 points. Imani Simmons was the other Scottie in double digits with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Scotties improve to 10-0 on the season and will travel to Bacone College and take on the junior varsity, a team they defeated 131-28 earlier in the year, on Friday December 2.
