JCCC women’s soccer wins battle of ranked teams

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - No. 10 ranked Johnson County Community College women's soccer handed No. 11 Allen Community College its first loss of the 2023 season on Saturday afternoon in Iola. The Cavaliers scored three first half goals to pull out a 3-1 victory over the previously unbeaten Red Devils. 

Sophomore midfielder Sydney Hammett, a transfer from Emporia State, put JCCC on the board just 12 minutes in off an assist from sophomore midfielder Alandra Bailey, her third of the year.  The goal was Hammett's third on the season. 

Nine minutes later freshman midfielder Lotta Meindl scored what proved to the be the game winner with an unassisted score. It is her second goal on the year and second game winner. 

Freshman midfielder Brenley Cunningham put the Cavaliers up 3-nil in the 32nd minute with her first score of her college career. Freshman midfielder Ansley Seevers provided the assist, which was her first of the season. 

Allen prevented the shutout when Audrey Smith fired scoring shot in the 74th minute. 

Between the pipes, freshman Maddox Fergus stopped three of four shots she faced to up her season record to 3-1-0 and lower her goals against average to 1.25. 

Johnson County will host Hesston College on Wednesday at 5 p.m. This will be just the sixth time JCCC has faced the Larks. The Cavaliers have won all five of the previous meetings, outscoring Hesston 58-to-1.
