Grizzly Soccer drops KJCCC opener to Coffeyville

EL DORADO, Kan. – No. 7 Butler soccer dropped a hard-fought contest to the visiting Coffeyville Red Ravens on Wednesday night at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

The win for Coffeyville (2-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 KJCCC) marked the Red Ravens first ever win in El Dorado over Butler (0-1-1 overall, 0-1-0 KJCCC) in the Adam Hunter era. The Grizzlies are now 25-2-1 in the Hunter era vs. Coffeyville.

In what was a defensive slugfest, the Red Ravens got out to the early lead with 27 minutes remaining in the first half. Veronica Calixto scored what would be the game's only goal as she collided with a few Grizzly defenders and tapped the ball towards the goal as it dribbled in behind Carla Apodaca, Butler's goalkeeper.

Apodaca finished the match with three saves on four shots on goal, allowing the lone goal.

Butler ended with 10 shots on goal and 19 shots overall in the match. The Grizzlies had opportunities at the goal throughout the match but couldn't punch it in. Butler had 12 corner shot opportunities compared to four for Coffeyville.

Coffeyville did not play on the attack much in the second half, clinging to its 1-0 lead. The match was physical throughout with two yellow cards going to the Red Ravens and one to Butler.

The #7 Grizzlies will head to Great Bend on Saturday to take on #14 Barton at the Cougar Soccer & Track Complex with a 10 a.m. start. Live stats will be available.
