Highland Baseball Splits With Neosho County at Home

Highland baseball enter a four-game series with Neosho County playing some of their best baseball of the season and put together a performance on the day that earned them a split of the doubleheader with the Panthers.

Scotties took game one 9-7 coming from behind in the contest, while falling in game two 17-6. The split moves to Highland to 10-35 on the season and 4-22 in Conference play.

A two-home run led the scoring off in the first game as Neosho notched it in the first inning and it would be the first of 12 home runs on the day between both teams. Highland answered with a run in the bottom of the first as Jordan McClellan scored on a groundout out by Nick Schifftner. Schifftner then hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2.

Neosho swung the lead back to themselves with a three-run top of the fourth on a three run homer, but the Scotties would answer in the bottom of the fifth by scoring four runs to take their first lead at 6-5. Victor Sanchez tattooed a solo home run and the go ahead run came in on a RBI single by Nash Nickle. Scotties tacked on three runs in the sixth scoring on an error and two run homer by Schifftner his second of the day. Neosho cut the Scottie lead in the half in the top of the seventh but Dylan Arnett would come in and preserve the 9-7 win for Highland.

Highland tallies their nine runs on 10 hits as Schifftner was 3-4 with five RBI's, two home runs and three runs scored. Conner Fiene went 2-3 with a run scored and double, while McClellan finished 2-4 with three runs scored and a RBI. Justin Rieschick picked up the win tossing six innings, while Arnett earned the save for the Scotties.

Game two both teams got on the board early as the Scotties tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on a McClellan home run his first of the season. In the second Neosho put together a five run inning on two hits which included a home run, while also getting two walks and a hit batter. Scotties saw Neosho add seven runs by batting around in the third inning and frame that featured seven hits including a pair of home runs.

In the fourth inning the Scotties got on the board again with an RBI double by Dalton Burt, then had a solo home run by Fiene in the fifth and a solo homer by Burt in the sixth along with a RBI single by McClellan in the inning, also. After six innings the Scotties trailed 14-5. Neosho tallied three in the top of the ninth and the Scotties got one in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to comeback falling 17-6.

At the plate in game two Burt was 3-4 with three RBI's, a double, home run and run scored, while Alejandro Pina went 3-5. Schifftner finished 2-4 with two runs scored with a double and McClellan had a two hit game. Six different Scotties saw action on the mound in game two.

After the split the Scotties now will head to Chanute, KS to continue the series with Neosho County on Saturday, April 27th for a doubleheader slated to start at 1:00pm.
