Colby softball opens season with sweep over Lady Indians

COLBY, Kan. -- The Colby Community College softball team opened its season with a pair of wins over McCook Community College Tuesday. Colby won the first game 5-4 and took the second game 16-8.

MCC falls to 0-8 on the season and will travel to Dodge City Sunday for a pair of games starting at 1 p.m.

Colby will visit MCC Feb. 26 in a pair of games starting at 1 p.m. at the Jaycees Sports Complex.

GAME 1 Colby CC 5, McCook CC 4: Colby came out with a pair of runs in the first inning to lead 2-0 until the MCC fifth when the Lady Indians scored three times to take the lead.
Freshmen Kassandra Orr, (Victoria, British Columbia) and Camryn Laird, (Pueblo, Colo.) both singled to lead off the inning but Orr was retired on the bases. After an out and a hit batter, Sophomore Jade Hollands (Effingham, Kan.) delivered a two-out, three-run homer to make it a 3-2 game.
Colby pushed across a run to tie the game in the sixth inning on a solo homer but MCC took a 4-3 lead in the seventh with two-out home run by freshman Sidney Sansregret, (Surrey, British Columbia).
Freshman Anna Wilcox, (Victoria, British Columbia) went six innings and allowed three hits, walked four and fanned three. After starting the seventh inning with a walk and a hit batter, was relieved by sophomore pitcher Karleigh Kleinknecht, (Cozad/Gothenburg High School) and after a strikeout, three straight walks gave Colby the win.
Sansregret, Hollands and Orr all had two hits each as the Lady Indians out-hit Colby 9-3.
After averaging five errors per game to start the season, MCC was not charged with an error in the game nor in Game 2.

GAME 2 Colby CC 16, McCook CC 8: After MCC scored a run in the first, Colby came back to score four runs of freshman starting pitcher Melanie Fye, (Ault, Colo.). MCC regained the lead in the second with five two-out runs highlighted by a three-run home run from Jade Hollands.
The Trojans scored three more runs in the second to take a 7-6 lead but MCC tied the game with a run in the third.
Colby was able to keep the lead for good with five runs in the third inning and ended the game with five runs in the sixth inning.
MCC had 11 hits in the game including two each from, Sidney Sansregret, Kassandra Orr, Karleigh Kleinknecht and freshman Alice Midiri, (Condove, Italy).
Fye went 2.2 innings in the circle. Kleinknecht came on for 2.1 innings of relief allowing one earned run, and Anna Wilcox pitched the sixth inning for MCC.
