Highland Volleyball Team Wins a Five Set Thriller over Fort Scott

September 26

Box Score Nothing comes easy in the Jayhawk Conference and that was the case on Wednesday night as the fifth ranked Highland volleyball team hosted Fort Scott for a Conference showdown. A  contest that went the distance as the Scotties earned the win 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 25-12, 22-25, 15-7).

Set one on the night, just like the matchup in 2017, belonged to Fort Scott as the Greyhounds started the set 5-3 but Highland went on a 3-0 run to take a 6-5 lead only to see a 4-0 Fort Scott run to give them the lead back. Fort Scott held on to the lead the rest of the first set despite the Scotties best efforts to comeback and Highland fell 22-25 in set one.

Looking to avoid falling down 2-0 in the match, the Scotties battled Fort Scott early in set two with four ties early but the Scotties went up 12-10 and then 15-12 on a Savannah Griesemer block. Highland ultimately established a 21-16 lead when Fort Scott used a late timeout in the set and the Scotties finished set two winning it 25-18 behind a Lee Sexton kill.

Set three belonged to the Scotties from the onset getting off to a 3-0 start including a Sexton stuff block and then led 6-1 and pushed the lead to 11-4 when Fort Scott called a timeout. Highland took their first double figure lead of the night at 16-6 and cruised to the set three win with a Sexton kill finishing the set off for the second time on the night as Highland won 25-12 in set three.

The fourth set was tied at 4-4 early but a 4-0 Fort Scott run gave them an 8-4 lead and the Scotties called a timeout. Fort Scott maintained the lead until a 4-0 Scottie run tied the match at 16-16 using a Cajia Allen ace to tie the match. Allen had another ace to give the Scotties the 17-16 lead but the match remained tight and was knotted at 20-20 when Fort Scott used a 3-0 run to take control late and used that to earn the 22-25 set win.

Scotties for the third time this season would go to a fifth set and for the third time Highland picked up the win in a five set battle. Scotties jumped out to a 6-1 lead when Fort Scott called a timeout and the Greyhounds then drew within three points. The Scotties answered with Emma Cohalla putting her signature on the match helping finish the contest as Highland won set five 15-7.

In the win the Scotties had contributions from everyone with Cohalla leading the way offensively with 18 kills, her 13th match with double figure kills, and added six digs and three blocks. Sexton posted double figure kills for the seventh time this season finishing with 10, while Allen had eight kills and 11 digs. Katie Pearson finished with 36 assists and 19 digs for another double-double, while Myla Turner tallied 19 digs.

The win gives Highland 20 wins this season marking the third straight year the volleyball team has won over 20 matches as the Scotties now sit at 20-2 on the year and 4-1 in KJCCC play. Scotties also stretched their win streak to 10-straight matches. Highland is back in action on Friday, September 28th at home for a Triangular with Ottawa JV and Southeast CC playing at 3:00 and 7:00pm.
