Knights Softball drops Kansas doubleheader

Colby, Kan. - The North Platte Community College Knights Softball Team finished out a weekend on the road with a double loss to Colby Community College on Sunday.

The Knights dropped a lead late in the first game resulting in a 5-4 defeat. Things got moving when Jayden Horner, of Firestone, Colo., hit a solo homer and went deep in the first inning.

Nevaeh Ramirez, of Thornton, Colo., was in the pitcher's circle. The righty allowed eight hits and five runs over six innings, striking out one.

The Knights hit one home run on the day. Zoey Bredleau-Beehler, of Portland, Ore., led the team with two hits in four at bats.

The Knights watched the second game slip away early as well unable to recover in a 9-1 loss. They struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Colby, giving up nine runs.

Pitcher Jordan Young, of Johnstown, Colo. lasted three and a third innings, allowing five hits and seven runs while striking out three.

Kyleigh Sullivan, of Fort Worth, Texas, threw two-thirds of an inning in relief. Horner led the Knights with two hits in three at bats.

"We started game one off with energy and enthusiasm but in fifth with two outs, we got caught on our heels and couldn't recover," said NPCC Knights Softball head coach Janelle Higgins. "Game two, we let Colby set the tone and didn't play our game. We fought in the sixth, but it was too late. We are learning every game. Being able to finally get outside and practice is helping, but we are very young and have to remember that we didn't get a season last year so even our returners are freshmen and learning. Softball is a marathon not a sprint, and we have a good pace going against very solid D1 JUCO competition."

The Knights are up next in Sterling, Colo. They play Northeastern Junior College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (MST) March 13.
