Kansas City Kansas Community College's women's soccer team continued its early season surge Wednesday, combining a hat trick and a defensive shutout for a 5-0 win over Coffeyville.

The win boosted the Blue Devils' Jayhawk Conference record to 3-0-1 and 4-0-1 overall heading into a 3 p.m. conference clash with Barton County in Great Bend Saturday. The Blue Devils are back home against Metropolitan Sept. 13.

Cora Ellermann, a 5-7 freshman forward from Magdeburg, Germany, posted the hat trick while freshman Maria Heuman of Green Ridge, Mo., had three saves in recording a shoutout in her first start in goal.

The Blue Devils broke a 0-0 deadlock with four goals in the final 20 minutes of the first half. Ellermann had the first three, with one coming on a perfect pass at the goal from Topeka Seaman's Jaycee Schumann with 18:47 left in the first half. Her second came in a scrum in front of the goal set up by sophomore Jordan Bedard on a shot that barely crossed the goal line with 6:19 left. She completed the hat trick on an assist from Piper freshman Sierra Montez two minutes later.

Bedard, a sophomore from Staley High School, made it 4-0 at halftime, scoring on a blast from outside the box with 18.8 seconds remaining. The goal came on an assist from Leslie Hernandez. Schumann got the final goal 10 minutes into the second half on an assist from Laura Ginguene of Orleans, France. KCKCC was credited with 25 shots.

"We got some players in who were hungry to play, and Cora kind of took over, capitalizing on the opportunities we were creating," said KCKCC Coach Shawn Uhlenhake. "Again, we got to play a lot of players and give our starters a rest. And we got another shutout."

The defense, which allowed only five shots, was headed by sophomores Payton Rayos of Raymore-Peculiar and Leslie Hernandez of Lincoln Prep as well as freshmen Ann Boehniein of Lee's Summit North and Malu Rocha of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
