Roadrunners defeat Fort Scott

The Roadrunners hosted the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds on Nov. 30 in the Davis Center. SFCC (9-3) overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to emerge with a 71-70 victory.

The Greyhounds controlled the game with a well-executed half-court offense and used their ability to run in transition when the opportunity presented itself. The Roadrunners went into the locker room trailing 40-37 at halftime.

A steal and layup from sophomore guard Willie Jimerson Jr. cut the Greyhounds' lead to 61-55 with more than six minutes remaining. Freshman guard Russell Baker splashed home a three-point basket from the elbow to give SFCC a one point advantage with less than three minutes on the clock.

Under two minutes left in the game, the Greyhounds fought back to tie the game at 65. An old fashioned three-point play by freshman guard Onteral Woodson Jr. put the Roadrunners ahead three-points. The Greyhounds had opportunities to win but missed a three-pointer with two seconds left on the clock.

"We were fortunate to get back into the game after being down 10 points," said Head Coach Kevin Thomas. "Fort Scott turned the ball over, and we were able to get a couple of layups to get back in the game. We'll will take the win, but Fort Scott outplayed us and out executed us tonight. We need to get better as a team."

Woodson scored 24 points. He knocked down 10 of 12 from the foul line and handed out a team-high five assists. Baker and Jimerson contributed 13 points apiece. Sophomore forward Amir Smith pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and also led in blocks with four. Sophomore guard Vonny Irvin led the team in steals with three.

SFCC will travel to St. Louis Dec. 4 to participate in the St. Louis College Shootout. SFCC will take on Olive-Harvey College at 10 a.m.
