Highland Men's Basketball Captures KJCCC Title With Win Over Fort Scott

For the second time under the guidance of Head Coach, Jerre Cole the Highland men's basketball team earned a Conference Championship as they put together a route of Fort Scott to cap the regular season and earn a share of the KJCCC DII title.

Scotties put together a 72-28 thrashing of Fort Scott to move to 27-2 on the season and finish Conference play 9-1 winning a share of the KJCCC DII title along with Johnson County. The 27th win matches the most wins in a single season in Highland men's basketball history and gives them their 18th straight win at home along with sixth straight win over Fort Scott. Later in the night Highland also won the coin flip against Johnson County meaning the Scotties will by the #1 seed in the Region VI Div. II Tournament.

After a 4-0 start to the game by Fort Scott and a lower scoring back and forth first ten minutes of the contest, the Scotties led 12-9 at the 9:56 mark of the first half when the media timeout was called. Out of the media timeout Highland outscored Fort Scott 22-2 the remainder of the first half and led 34-11 at halftime.

Fort Scott at the half had made just five field goals and scored 11 points but Highland sophomore, Taiveyhon Mason, had 15 points at intermission and surpassed 1,000 points in his Scottie career and the Scotties shot 51.9% from the floor in the first half as a team. The second half was much of the same for each side as the Scotties cruised to a 78-28 win over the Greyhounds.

In the win Highland shot 50% from the floor marking the 16th time this year the Scotties have shot 50% or better in a game. Highland also took care of the ball only turning the ball over eight times for the 11th game this season with under 10 turnovers. It was the Scottie defense that stood out in the game as Highland held Fort Scott to just 28 points the lowest scoring total by a Scottie opponent this season as the Greyhounds shot 18.8% from the floor and 3.8% from three-point range.

Mason led the day for the Scotties with 21 points adding two rebounds, three assists and four steals while surpassing 1,000 points in his Scottie career. Tristen Hull joined Mason in double figures finishing with 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while adding four steals, while Cole Barton chipped in nine points and Jaquan Daniels finished with eight.

With the win the Scotties earned a first round bye in the Region VI Tournament and will await the winner of the KCK and Fort Scott game for a showdown in the Region VI Semifinals which is set for Saturday, March 2nd at 3:00pm at Ben Allen Fieldhouse.
