Lady Indians improve to 6-1; cruise past Hesston College

HESSTON, Kan. -- The McCook Community College women's basketball team improved to 6-1 Saturday, winning 88-46 against Hesston College in the final game of the Lark Classic.

"I thought we came out with the energy we need to have all the time," said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett.

Freshman Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla Spain) helped jumpstart the Lady Indian offense with MCC's first 10 points of the game but the winless Larks battled hard and fought back to trail 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.

A couple more Cano buckets early in the second quarter pushed MCC to a 26-17 lead. The Lady Indians extended it to 33-22 with just under three minutes left then outscored the Larks 10-2 the rest of the way to lead 43-24.

"Our second quarters haven't been great and we really changed the game at that point," Pritchett said. "Carla had another good one and has been shooting it really well."

MCC outscored Hesston by 11 points in both the third and fourth quarters.

Cano led MCC with 21 points including a three-for-seven showing from the arc and topped the team with eight rebounds.

Sophomore Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) scored 15 points to go along with six rebounds. Sophomore transfer Paula Rosello Mateu, (Barcelona, Spain) scored 15 points and was three-for-five from the 3-point line.

Freshman Gail Whiting (Montgomery, Ala.) scored nine points and named eight rebounds. Freshman Amiya Dartest (Jennings, La.) scored nine points and was three-for-six from the arc.

Freshman Kelly Snelling (Gering, Neb.) chipped in eight points. Redshirt freshman transfer Jessika Espinoza, (El Paso, Texas) scored five points and had six rebounds. Sophomore transfer Achock Gumwel, (Sydney, Australia), had five rebounds and four points.

MCC shot 44 percent from the field, made 11 of 28 shots from the 3-point line (39.3 percent) but just 11 of 24 from the free-throw line (45.8 percent).

"We are close to where I want us to be shooting percentage," Pritchett said. "Today we just lacked making free throws."

MCC out-rebounded Hesston 46-31. The Larks turned the ball over 28 times to 15. The Lady Indians scored 40 points off those turnovers. MCC also got 41 bench points Saturday.

Hesston falls to 0-10 on the season.

The 6-1 Lady Indians will play three straight nights starting Thursday in Crete against the Doane University JVs, then Friday and Saturday for the final home games of the semester.

On Friday MCC takes on Western Wyoming Community College in a 5:30 p.m. game at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. On Saturday MCC will celebrate alumni with the annual game against the MCC All-Stars set for 4 p.m.
