Highland Softball Sweeps Hesston in KJCCC Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 In just the second day of home games this season the #8 Highland softball team put on strong display scoring 28 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Hesston picking up 14-0 and 14-6 five inning wins for a pair of KJCCC wins. 

Capitalizing on 20 hits, 11 walks/hit batters and nine Hesston errors the Scotties rolled to a game one 14-0 win and then capped the day with a 14-6 win in game two picking up each victory in five innings. 

Game 1 vs Hesston 
After setting the Larks down in order in the top of the first inning the Scotties got the offense rolling by batting around in the bottom of the first inning scoring six runs on four hits, three walks and a hit batter. Scotties worked the bases loaded and Alyssa Wesley was then hit by a pitch to bring in the first run of the game, while Hannah Schmidt cleared the bases in the next at bat blasting a grand slam and Highland tacked on another run on an Elizabeth Hays RBI single to lead 6-0 after the first inning. Highland tacked on another run on a pair of Hesston errors in the third inning and then opened the game up further by doubling their score with seven runs in the fourth. A two RBI double by Isabella Konieczka, two run homer by Chevelle Sartin and RBI single by Alexis Hodapp highlighted the seven run fourth inning and the Scotties set Hesston down in order in the fifth for the 14-0 shutout win in five innings. 

Bailey Lacy was on point inside the circle tossing a five inning shutout giving up only three runs in the win and striking out four. Offensively the Scotties notched 10 hits with 2-3 game by Konieckza who had a double, two RBI's, a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base. Sartin finished 2-3 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored, a walk and reached on an error, while Hodapp was 3-3 with a run scored, RBI and was hit by a pitch. Cassidy Greer had three strong plate appearances drawing two walks and reaching on an error scoring three runs with three stolen bases. 

Game 2 vs Hesston 
Hesston took the early lead in game two with a run in the first inning but the Scotties had an answer sending seven to the plate and scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Hannah Schmidt notched a RBI double and Alyssa Wesley followed it with a two RBI double to score the three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Highland kept the scoring going in the bottom of the second with two more runs and than Hesston with a three-run homer cut the Highland lead to one at 5-4 entering the bottom of the fourth. Scotties were not rattled as they answered with three runs in the bottom of the third on two hit batter, an error, sac-fly, RBI single by Isabella Konieczka and a walk. Hesston drew within two in the top of the fourth behind a pair of runs but Highland had a big answer this time scoring six in the fourth on just three hits, but also three Hesston errors as a RBI double by Chevelle Sartin highlighted the inning. Scotties then put Hesston down in order in the top of the fifth to secure the 14-6 five inning win and sweep. 

Offensively the Scotties again spread the wealth at the plate as Konieczka was 3-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, two stolen bases and reached on an error, while Cassidy Greer was 1-3 with three runs scored and reached on an error twice. Wesley had a 2-3 game with two RBI's, a double, two runs scored and was hit by a pitch. In the circle Sarah Bond earned the win tossing four innings giving up six runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out one and Kelly Uthe tossed the fifth inning facing just three batters to finish the game. 

The Scotties 28 runs in the doubleheader is the most in a doubleheader this season, while they stole 10 bases in the doubleheader and had 21 hits with eight extra base hits. 

Highland keeps the season rolling on Saturday, March 30th in Iola, Kansas as they hit the road for a KJCCC doubleheader against Allen County.
