Highland Baseball Opens Season With Pair of Tough Losses to State Fair

After Mother Nature caused a delay to the start of the baseball season for Highland the Scotties finally got the bats swinging last Thursday as they traveled to Marshall, Missouri to take on State Fair Community College in a doubleheader.

The Scotties eager to get the baseball season started fell in a pair of tough battles against State Fair suffering 4-1 & 6-2 losses.

Highland took the early lead in game one with a pair of doubles in the Top of the first inning as Nash Nickle laced a double into play and Dalton Burt followed suit to bring in Nickle and the Scotties led 1-0. That unfortunately would be the only run for the Scotties in the contest as State Fair answered in the bottom of the second with a three run frame and tacked on one more in the third, as the Scotties fell 4-1.

Scotties had six hits in the loss with Nick Schiffner notching a 2-3 performance, while Nickle went 1-2 with a double and run scored and Buter was 1-3 with an RBI. On the mound Jake Schrock tossed three innings taking the loss, while Drake Seetin and Noah McClanahan also pitched.

Game two of the doubleheader was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when State Fair plated a run and then they added five run in the bottom of the sixth. Scotties attempted a late comeback getting on the board in the seventh inning with a pair of runs but fell short on a comeback falling 6-2.

Three of the Scotties seven hits on the day came off the bat of Jordan McClellan as he was 3-4 with an RBI, while Victor Sanchez finished 2-3 with an RBI. On the mound Justin Rieschick tossed a strong five innings in the start giving up just one run on three hits and struckout seven.

Highland after the 0-2 start to the season headed to Texas on Saturday for a doubleheader against North Central Texas College to keep the season rolling.
