Highland Softball Suffers Pair of Losses in Doubleheader With Jefferson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The early season schedule didn't get any easier for the Highland softball team after their trip to Mississippi the Scotties played host to NJCAA Division I program Jefferson College who is off to a strong start coming into Saturday's doubleheader with the Scotties.

Scotties finished the day with a pair of tough losses falling 5-0 in game one, while losing game two 12-7 moving to 3-4 on the season with the losses.

Game 1 – Jefferson Won 5-0
Offense was sparse for the Scotties in game one of the doubleheader against Jefferson as Highland managed only four base runners in the contest. Jefferson did some damage early with two-outs in the first inning tallying the game's first run and then added two more in the third and again two more in the seventh to secure the 5-0 win. Highland got their lone hit in the second, drew a walk in the third and two walks in the seventh but were unable to score.

The Scottie offense struggled striking out 16 times to Kristina Bettis the starter for Jeffferson. Aliks Serna registered the only hit for the Scotties, while Lauryn Johnson, Alley Rickel and Alyx Salinas each recorded a walk. In the circle for the Scotties, Shelby Downard tossed six innings as the starter giving up five runs on five hits, five walks and one hit batter while striking out six.

Game 2 – Jefferson Won 12-7
While the offense came alive for the Scotties in game two Highland fell behind early and was unable to overcome the deficit against Jefferson. Jefferson batted around in the top of the first and tallied five runs but the Scotties answered in the bottom of the first with three runs. Cheyenne Minnick led the bottom of the first off with a double, which was followed by a walk and bunt single to load the bases. Aliks Serna brought in a run reaching on a fielder's choice and then Alley Rickel with two-outs hit a two RBI double to make 5-3. After surrendering a run in the top of the second Shelby Downard notched an RBI single in the third making it 6-4. Jefferson tallied two in the fourth on a home run, added one in the fifth and sixth innings and two more in the seventh, while Highland got an RBI double by Rickel in the fifth and scored two in the sixth on a RBI single by Downard and bases loaded walk by Rickel but were unable to ultimately comeback falling 12-7.

In the loss Chevelle Sartin was 3-5 with a double, three runs scored and a stolen base, while Downard went 2-4 with two RBI and a stolen base. Rickel was stout at the plate going 3-3 with two doubles and four RBI along with a walk to lead the Scottie offense. Crystal Feldkamp started the contest tossing three innings, while Lilli Weir, Bailey Lacy and Kennedi Ratcliff all pitched in the game.

Highland will look to bounce back from the losses when they take the diamond next Tuesday, March 10th on the road in Lindsborg, Kansas playing Bethany JV in a doubleheader starting at 3:00pm.
