Highland Football Suffers Tough Loss to Garden City

October 19

Box Score Riding a three-game winning streak this season and six-game win streak at home the #12 Highland football team look for another feather in their cap on Saturday as they hosted #8 Garden City for top flight KJCCC clash.

But the Scotties win streaks were snapped and Coach Aaron Arnold the Scotties fell 37-7 at home moving Highland's losing streak to Garden City to six-straight games.

The game started well for the Scotties with the opening drive working Highland into the Red zone ultimately leading to a 38-yard field goal attempt by Jeri Velasquez. Scotties had the chance for the initial lead by the field goal missed and Garden City took over. The first quarter would ultimately be a stalemate and the game was scoreless after one quarter.

Second quarter things flipped fully into Garden City's favor as the Broncobusters spent most of the quarter on the field with their offense limiting the Scotties offense to 12 plays in the second quarter. Broncbusters found the endzone for a 44-yard touchdown pass with 13:37 left in the first half and then had a five-yard touchdown pass at the 4:46 mark to lead 14-0. The Scotties went to punt the ball away with nine seconds remaining the first half and a bad snap led to a safety and Garden City leading 16-0 entering halftime.

The deficit grew to three scores in the third quarter for the Scotties after Garden City scored on two-plays after a Highland interception making it 23-0 but Highland had an answer mounting their only scoring drive covering 70 yards on nine plays ending with a four-yard touchdown run by Alfonso Franklin with 3:21 left in the third quarter and then the defense came up with a big fourth down stop after Garden City dropped a sure touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Garden City however found the endzone twice more on a pair of touchdown runs and capped the contest with the 37-7 win.

In the loss the Scotties were outgained 435 to 219 total yards of offense as the Broncbusters ran for over 360 total yards of offense. Joseph Cambridge finished 18-35 for 157 yards with an interception, while Antavious Cook caught two passes for 45 yards and Franklin ran for 39 yards and touchdown on 12 carries and caught four passes for 17 yards.

Defensively the Scotties saw Johnathan Butler record 19 tackles and a sack, while William McCall had 10 tackles and an interception.

The loss sends Highland to 4-3 on the season and 2-3 in KJCCC action with three games left in the 2019 season, while it's only the second loss at Porter Family Stadium since the turf installation. Scotties will be back in action next Saturday, October 26th against Dodge City on the road for a 1:00pm kickoff.
