No. 8 Barton Deals No. 17 KCKCC First Loss

Women's Soccer

No. 8 ranked Barton County broke a 1-1 deadlock early in the second half and held on for a 2-1 women's soccer win in Great Bend Saturday.

The loss was the first for Blue Devils (4-1-1), who are ranked No. 17 in the latest NJCAA DI poll. The Blue Devils are right back in action Tuesday when they host Metropolitan Community College at 6 p.m.

Barton took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted Aya Saiki goal with just 24:11 gone in the first half. However, the Blue Devils responded almost immediately. Omaha freshman Mia Hurt scored on an assist from another freshman, Jaycee Schumann of Topeka Seaman, at the 28:45 mark. Fiona Jolly broke the tie with an unassisted goal just 9:03 into the second half, and the Cougars' defense made it stand up.

"We gave a great effort, but a couple of mistakes cost us," said KCKCC Coach Shawn Uhlenhake. "That's what happens when we play good teams. They will capitalize on mistakes. Mia Hurt had a great goal from Jaycee Schumann."

KCKCC sophomore goalkeeper Karli Angle of Liberty North had saves on five of Barton's seven shots on goal. The Cougars got off 16 total shots to 13 for the Blue Devils, who were limited to four shots on goal.
