Kansas City Kansas Community College stayed right in the thick of the Jayhawk Conference women's soccer race Wednesday with a clutch 3-1 home win over No. 18 Butler.

The win improved the 14th ranked Blue Devils' record to 7-2-2 and kept them within striking distance of the Jayhawk's three once-beaten teams, No. 7 Barton (7-1-2), No. 10 Hutchinson (6-1-3) and No. 16 Cowley (5-1-3).

The Blue Devils are right back in action at 5 p.m. Saturday in Coffeyville before taking on the top two leaders – Barton at home next Wednesday and at Hutchinson Oct. 18.

"A good win, but we can't lose focus," KCKCC Coach Shawn Uhlenhake said. "Coffeyville will be itching to knock us off."

The win over Butler got some measure of revenge from a 1-1 tie in El Dorado earlier this year. Jaycee Schumann, a freshman forward from Topeka Seaman, had a pair of goals while freshmen Cora Ellermann had one goal and two assists to lead the way.

KCKCC led 1-0 at halftime with Schumann scoring on an assist from freshman defender Ann Boehnlein of Lee's Summit North at the 25:00 mark. The Blue Devils quickly widened the lead to 2-0 just four minutes into the second half on Ellermann's unassisted goal. Butler cut the lead in half off an unassisted goal by Kaitlin Erwin at 65:00, but it lasted just two minutes with Schumann scoring her second goal on Ellermann's second assist.

The Blue Devils (9-2-2 overall) outshot Butler 20-11, scoring the three goals on 10 shots on goal. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies were limited to just three shots, two of which were turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Karli Angle.
