MCC softball drops Saturday doubleheader to Garden City

The McCook Community College softball opened the home season Saturday with a pair of losses to Garden City. The Broncbusters won the first game 10-2 and took the second game 10-9.

"The kids played hard and made strides today," said MCC Coach Kevin Kaalberg. "We swung the bats well, we will continue to work at playing more consistently on defense."

MCC committed five errors in each game.

The Lady Indians fall to 0-4 on the season.

MCC's next game with Colby has been changed over concerns with the weather.

Tuesday's scheduled game has been moved back to Wednesday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 16, the Lady Indians are scheduled to play at Dodge City for a pair of games starting at 1 p.m.

MCC's next homestand is slated for Feb. 26 (1 p.m.) against Colby followed by home doubleheaders Feb. 29 (1 p.m.) against Central Community College and March 1 (1 p.m.) against Southeast Community College.

GAME 1 Garden City CC 10, McCook CC 2: The Broncbusers broke open a 4-1 game with five runs in the fourth inning.
Freshman pitcher Anna Wilcox, (Victoria, British Columbia) went the distance in the circle allowing 10 hits but only two earned runs. She walked four and struck out two. MCC committed five errors behind her.
MCC had seven hits in the game. Sidney Sansregret, (freshman, Surrey, British Columbia) doubled and singled; freshman Alice Midiri, (Condove, Italy) had a pair of singles and freshman Megan Blood-Smyth, (Thornton, Colo.) had a double.

GAME 2 Garden City CC 10, McCook CC 9: The Broncbusters scored a pair of unearned runs in the first and took advantage of an error, a walk and a wild pitch in the second to take a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Indians came back in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Kassandra Orr, (Victoria, British Columbia), sophomore Kassidy Powers, (Severance, Colo.), freshman Camryn Laird, (Pueblo, Colo.), Megan Blood-Smyth and Lexee Johnson (freshman, Delta, Utah) all picked up RBIs in the rally to make it just a 5-4 deficit.
MCC tied the game at 5-5 in the third with an RBI single by Laird.
Garden City scored twice in the fourth but MCC countered with a pair of runs on bases-loaded walks to tie it at 7-7. The Broncbusters took a 9-7 lead in the fifth but the Lady Indians tied it at 9-9 with a two-out, two-run single from freshman Kaitlyn Lord, (Colorado Springs, Colo.)
Garden City scored the eventual game-winner on MCC's fifth error of the game in the sixth inning.
The Lady Indians had eight hits in the game with a double and a single by Powers, two hits from Orr, and a double by Johnson.
Freshman pitcher Melanie Fye, (Ault, Colo.) was relieved by sophomore Karleigh Kleinknecht, (Cozad/Gothenburg High School) in the second inning. Anna Wilcox went the final two innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
