Long Road Trip Can’t Derail KCKCC Women’s Soccer

The longest road trip of the season didn't faze Kansas City Kansas Community College's young women's soccer team Wednesday.

Brushing aside a 410-mile bus trip to Liberal, the Blue Devils posted a 4-0 win over Seward County in their Jayhawk Conference opener. The second win in two starts, the Blue Devils are back home Saturday against Dodge City with an 11 a.m. first kick. A men's game will follow at 1:30 p.m.

Piper freshman forward Sierra Montez gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead with a goal midway through the first half before KCKCC put the game out of reach with three second half goals.

Freshman midfielder Laura Ginguene scored two of the second half goals, while sophomore Malu Rocha the third. Sophomore Karli Angle had the shutout in goal for KCKCC.

"With a 6 ½-hour bus ride, we had some hurdles to clear, but we were able to deal with them," said KCKCC Coach Shawn Uhlenhake. "The fact we were able to play 22 players was a big factor. It was hot, and I think Seward got a little tired the second half. Also, it was pretty windy, and we got the wind the second half. Anytime you can win on the road is a big plus."
