No.15 Blue Devils Split with No.2 JCCC, 7-3 and 6-3

The Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball team (44-8) split with Johnson County Community College (44-10) 7-3 and 6-3 May 3 at the KCKCC baseball field. The Blue Devils headed into the last weekend of the regular season with a conference record of 23-5 - behind JCCC (25-3) and tied with Cowley College (23-5).

 

In the first game, each team recorded three errors. Although out hitting the Cavaliers six to five, the Blue Devils couldn't do enough offensively to match the top seeded Cavaliers. Brady Patterson led with a team-high two hits. Peyton Basler led off the team with a solo home run in the fifth inning, which made it a three-run game. Freddie Nolen IV and Marcus Dierks both recorded an RBI in the bottom of the fourth inning.

 

Maclane Finley recorded the loss while throwing for 4.1 innings letting up six runs, five earned, from the five Cavalier hits. Dalton Smith threw for the remaining 2.2 innings and let in one run while walking three batters.

 

For the second game, the Blue Devils trailed until the bottom of the sixth inning when Frankie Santiago started things off for the Blue Devils with a two-run shot over the centerfield wall to tie the game a two apiece. Brady Kern started the rally in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring from third base off a passed ball. Santiago came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a sac-fly to deep right field to score Basler. Nolen came up and delivered with a two-run double to deep center field making it 6-2 in favor of KCKCC. Santiago led the team with three RBI and Nolen recorded three hits with two RBI.

 

Mason Davenport went the distance and recorded the win while letting up just three runs from the six Cavalier hits. He struck out nine batters and walked just one.
