Highland Men Cruise to 7-0 Start to Season Behind Two Wins at Scottie Classic

For the third and fourth time this season in seven games the Highland Men's basketball team posted a 50+ percent shooting percentage in the contest as a team and used that to propel themselves to two more wins as they hosted their annual Scottie Classic over the weekend.

On Friday the Scotties dispatched of Quakerdale Prep winning 124-70 and followed that up with a 90-39 victory over Graceland JV.

Within the first five minutes of the contest on Friday against Quakerdale, Highland had established a double figure lead going up 15-5. Scotties extended their lead over the first 11 minutes of the first half while holding Quakerdale to under 10 points during that span. Scotties owned as high as a 35 point lead in the first half and went into halftime up 61-30. Second half opened up with a 6-0 Highland run and the Scotties put together a 15-0 run over two and half minutes later in the second half to push the lead out further hitting the century mark with eight minutes left and ultimately cruise to the 124-70 win.

The 124 points is the most this season for Highland men and most under Head Coach, Jerre Cole in his 10 seasons at Highland, while the Scotties also were hot from the floor shooting 61.7% as a team. Highland dominated the game in several ways winning the rebounding battle 46-27 and forced 19 Quakerdale turnovers, while holding them to 37.5% shooting.

Seven double figure scorers helped guide Highland to the win as Jaquan Daniels posted 20 points with six rebounds going 8-11 from the floor. Luiz Machado Jr. posted 17 points with five rebounds, while Taiveyhon Mason scored 13 points adding four assists. Both DJ Doakes and Tristen Hull each chipped in 12 points, while Amear Johnson and Andre Jackson both notched 10 points. Hull and Jackson added sixth and seven rebounds each.

On Saturday the Scotties started the contest against Graceland JV in quick fashion with a pair of dunks for their first two buckets of the game and used a 9-0 run to start the game and take early control. Scotties held a double figure lead less than five minutes into the game going up 13-3 with 15:30 minutes left in the first half. Highland defense for the second straight game held an opponent to under double digits scoring for nearly half of the first half again and went into halftime up 50-14. Out of halftime Highland was off and running again opening the half on a 12-0 run including back-to-back dunks by Doakes and used that to cruise to the 90-39 win over Graceland JV.

For the fourth time this season Highland notched 50+ percent shooting night finishing with 51.4% from the floor as a team, while holding Graceland JV to 25.9% from the floor with 10 of their 14 made baskets coming from three-point range. Scotties were dominated on the board gathering 54 rebounds to Graceland's 24 in the contest.

Doakes led the Scotties with 14 points going 6-8 from the floor, while Daniels on his birthday tallied 13 points with six rebounds and four assists. Amear Johnson had a season best 13 points and seven rebounds, while Tristen Hull scored 12 points and Taiveyhon Mason added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.

The two wins have the #7 Scotties now at 7-0 on the season headed into Thanksgiving week which will still be busy for Highland as the guys are set for action on Wednesday, November 21st on the road at the University of St. Mary JV in Leavenworth with a 6:00pm tip.
