Blue Devils Fall in Duel Against Butler, 3-0

The Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball team (1-1) fell in the season opener against the Butler Grizzlies (1-0) 3-0 Feb. 9 in Kansas City, Kan. Maclane Finley pitched five innings for the Blue Devils and only gave up one run, one hit and tallied three strikeouts.  

The Blue Devils offense was led by Peyton Basler and Jackson Mervosh who both had a double on the game. Gehrig Goldbeck went 1 of 5 from the plate and had one strikeout. Tanner Pachorek finished the day going 1 for 4 with two strikeouts. The last Blue Devil who had a hit came from Freddie Nolen IV who went 1 for 4. Weston Fries went for one and a thirds inning with three strikeouts. Dalton Smith pitched in the ninth inning and gave up no hits or runs to give the Blue Devils a chance to keep the game going. In the bottom of the ninth, Pachorek got on base with a single but Nolen IV, Dierks and Goldbeck were unable to get a hit, and the game ended.

The Grizzlies pieced together five hits for three runs. Taber Stokes went 1 of 4 from the plate and had a double with an RBI. Both Anibal Rivera and CJ Reid went 1 for 4 and had a strikeout. Tyler Butash went 1 for 3 but had two strikeouts. The last Grizzly to record a hit came from Breon Horne who went 1 for 3 and no strikeouts. Butler threw six guys and combined for five Blue Devil hits. Dayton Pelfrey recorded the win with one inning pitched and one strikeout.

The next game for the Blue Devils is against the Rockhurst University Hawks at 3 p.m. Feb. 12 at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
