Lady Tiger soccer team suffers first loss of the season

Cowley College head women's soccer coach Roberto dos Santos always says the most dangerous lead in soccer is 2-0. Well, his team found that out the hard way on Wednesday at the Mark A. Phillips Athletic Complex as the No. 10-ranked Lady Tigers led Kansas City Kansas Community College 2-0 at the end of the first half before the Lady Blue Devils answered with three second-half goals to win 3-2.

"They were better than us in the second half," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "They came out strong, capitalized early to tie the game, and then got a chance to score the go-ahead goal."

The loss drops Cowley into a three-way tie for second place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 4-1-2.

On Wednesday, Cowley got first-half goals from Lucia Rivas and Anne Fernandes to take the 2-0 halftime lead. However, it took only three minutes into the second half for the Lady Blue Devils to cut into its deficit as Mia Hurt headed in a corner kick from Jaycee Schumann.

A little more than seven minutes later, Kansas City would tie the game as Jordan Bedard dribbled through a pair of Cowley defenders to score the game-tying goal.

With Kansas City out-shooting Cowley 14-4 in the second half, the Lady Blue Devils' constant pressure amounted to them getting the go-ahead goal by Payton Ramos with 22:17 left to play.

Cowley never really threatened again as Kansas City joined Barton and Cowley in a tie for second place in the conference.

The Lady Tigers will now prepare to play at conference-leading Hutchinson Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday. The No. 8-ranked Lady Blue Dragons are 7-0-3 overall and 4-0-3 in the conference.

"Hutchinson will be another battle." dos Santos said. "Everybody in the conference is tough, so we will have to regroup and fix things we need to work on."
