Highland Volleyball Ends Strong Season With Tough Loss in District Tournament

Record breaking season for the #3 Highland volleyball team came to a close at the Region VI District M Tournament with a tough five set loss to Kansas City Kansas Community College on Saturday.

Highland fell 25-15, 23-25, 18-25, 25-22, 10-15 in the Semifinal contest against KCKCC, facing them for the second straight year in the Semifinals of the Region VI District Tournament.

Both teams put together small runs early in set one but Highland's 4-0 run to work to a 7-5 lead help the Scotties take control of the first set. Behind a Cajia Allen ace and Lee Sexton kill Highland went up 16-10 leading to KCKCC using their second timeout of the set. The Scotties pushed the lead out further and went on take set one 25-15.

Set two saw Highland in the driver seat early leading by as many as seven at 12-5 but KCKCC closed the gap and tied the set at 19-19. It remained tight down the stretch and KCKCC went on to snag set two 23-25. Set three also went to KCKC as the worked to a 10-5 lead in the set and despite the Scotties advances KCKCC held Highland off to take an 18-25 set three.

Needing set four to keep the season alive the Scotties won a tight battle. KCKCC started the set going up 5-0 but Scotties battled back to take their first lead of the set at 11-10 and then down the stretch held on a lead and won set four 25-22 to force a fifth set.

In the fifth set the Scotties fell down 6-3 and trailed 8-4 when teams switched sides of the court and that cushion was good for KCKCC to hold of Highland and take the set 10-15 and end Highland's recording breaking season.

Four ladies finished the match with double figure kills led by Sexton who had 14, while Cajia Allen recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 19 digs.
