A pair of late goals lifts the Lady Tiger soccer team to a 3-1 road win

Wrapping up the regular season with games against three straight ranked opponents, the No. 16-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team did a good job of not looking ahead in a 3-1 win at Coffeyville on Saturday.

The victory moves Cowley into third place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 8-2-3. Coffeyville (4-11) is now 2-11 in conference play.

On Saturday, Cowley's Lea Evin got the scoring started a little over 16 minutes into the game. The goal by Evin was her fourth of the season, and was assisted on by Lucia Rivas.

Coffeyville would answer back on a goal by Thayline Teixeira with 7:30 left in the opening half.

The score would remain tied until Cowley's Manuela Gorny scored her first goal of the season on a beautiful shot from 15 yards out with just under seven minutes remaining.

Lady Tiger sophomore Kayleigh Mack got in on the fun less than one minute later as she scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Ada Ronnemaa, and Cowley would hang on for the 3-1 victory.

"This was an important win for us," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "Coffeyville was motivated to pull off the upset until we were finally able to pull away with those two goals late in the game."

Cowley will host conference-leading Barton Community College on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Cougars are 10-1-2 on the season and ranked seventh nationally. Barton and Cowley battled to a 1-1 tie on September 16 in Arkansas City.

"We need to prepare for Barton on Wednesday," dos Santos said. "Each one of our remaining games is going to be championship-quality games."
